DAILY DEVOTIONAL: JUNE 18 IF THE LORD IS YOUR SHEPHERD (1) SCRIPTURE: PSALM 23: 1; ISAIAH 40: 11

God is known by many titles by many people, such as The Almighty God, The Sovereign Lord, The Most High God, The Everlasting King, The Creator, just to mention but few. He relates with each of us as par the title we perfectly know Him for. God reveals Himself to people based on how exactly one understands His title. Among all the titles of God, one stands that many Christians seem not to understand its uniqueness. This title is “Shepherd.” King David happened to know God exactly as Shepherd. No other person can tell us of this great a name apart from David. King David was an experience shepherd and could be the only person who could explore a wonderful name of God as Shepherd in just six verses of the scripture. Understanding Psalm 23 about the LORD being a shepherd in Spiritual realm can change our relationship with God greatly.

Those rearing animals know the great position of a shepherd. The shepherd of the flock guides, directs, protects and provides foods for the flock. The flock under a shepherd completely depends on the shepherd. King David fully understood who God was to him when he said “The LORD is my shepherd.” There are some verses of the scripture which say God and Jesus Christ are shepherd of those who believe in them. For instance, Jacob acknowledged God as his shepherd (Gen. 48: 15). Prophet Isaiah said God tends His flock like a shepherd (Isa. 40: 11). In the New Testament, Jesus is called “The Good Shepherd (John 10: 11). He is said to be a “Great Shepherd (Heb. 13: 20). We see Him as “The Chief Shepherd” in (1 Peter 5: 4).

Evidently, Psalm 23 appeared to be the most taught in schools and churches. Those not too known for being Christians write PSALM 23 on their door posts as well as, vehicle graffiti or stickers. The knowledge of saying “The LORD is my shepherd” is deeper than what the lips of people are proclaiming every now and then. Today’s devotional starts up six series on the practical application by which Christians saying “The LORD is my shepherd” should understand. Acknowledging the LORD as our shepherd should make us rely on Him, depend on Him and believe in all His words for our instructions and directions. As our shepherd, we are to trust Him enough that He supervises and watches over us 24 hours daily. No flock disbelieves the protective role of its shepherd. So, we are to always allow ourselves go the ways the LORD directs us in life. PRAYER:

Pray, asking God, the LORD Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to enable you grasp the Spiritual meaning of “The LORD is my Shepherd” as King David did in Jesus name.
