FCT Police: DPO Receives Award for Good Conduct
By Ma’ashin Ibn Ma’ashin
In a country where the police force is often maligned for its corruption and human rights abuses, the story of Faith and her experience at the Karshi Police Division stands as a testament to the existence of dedicated and compassionate officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
Under the leadership of DPO CSP Obianom Vitalis, the Karshi Police Division demonstrated that there are still individuals who genuinely care about serving the public and upholding the law.
Faith, a girl aged between 9 and 11 who was missing and living on the streets, eventually found herself at the Karshi Police Division, disoriented and scared. However, CSP Obianom and his team quickly set to work.
First, they launched a search operation via the FCT Police Command network to identify Faith and reunite her with her parents, and then established a sense of trust and comfort with Faith.
They understood that she needed to adjust to a new environment, which included interacting with police officers and being in a structured setting.
CSP Obianom ensured that Faith was well taken care of and provided a sense of stability during this difficult transition.
Faith’s traumatic experience required emotional support, and CSP Obianom and his team rose to the occasion.
They provided her with the care and concern she needed, helping her feel more at ease and secure in her surroundings.
Caring for Faith also required logistical arrangements, such as providing food and shelter. CSP Obianom made sure that these basic needs were met, ensuring Faith’s overall well-being.
As Faith’s family came to claim her, CSP Obianom had to facilitate the reunification process.
This involved ensuring that Faith was prepared for her return home and that her family was aware of her experiences during her time at the police station.
CSP Obianom’s actions demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of those under his care and his desire to see Faith safely returned to her loved ones.
The story of Faith culminated in CSP Obianom being given an award by a conglomeration of communities in the area, known as Allied Associations and Unions in Karshi, in collaboration with Business West Africa Magazine, in appreciation of the DPO’s good conduct and effective policing.
CSP Obianom, who was presented with the award in his office at Karshi, on July 1st, expressed gratitude to the community leaders and the newspaper organization for finding him worthy of the award.
He said the successes ascribed to him were achieved by the collaborative efforts of officers and men of the Karshi Police Division.
Obianom described the award as a morale booster but gave credit also to his superiors, particularly the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bennett Igwe, whom he described as a father and a mentor. “We at this level can only replicate the good work that our CP has been doing in and around the FCT,” he said.
CSP Obianom has been commended all around the communities.
A woman leader from Mararaban Loko, Mrs. Toyin Moses, said Obianom’s polite and humble policing style “is what citizens want of all officers, and since when the DPO has been here with us, the police as well as the hoodlums no longer harass us.”
A church leader, Prophetess Bose Adeoye, remarked that the police ought not to relent and that DPO Obianom should continue the good work.
Faith, who was nicknamed “Police Pikin” during her short stay with the police, also attended the award presentation ceremony along with her mother, who lives in Angwan Hakimi.
Faith remarked that all the officers are good and that her ambition “is to become a lawyer and a police officer.”
The group’s spokesman, Mr. Okafor Stephen Onukwube, reiterated that DPO Obianom is committed not only to the mission; he is honest, polite, and an officer of high-level integrity. These traits, he said, “enabled the DPO to build trust with the communities
“Promoting and replicating the model of policing, as exemplified by an officer like Obianom, is crucial for building safer and more cohesive societies,” said Anaegbu, who advised the Force to “prioritize training and reward opportunities” that reinforce effective policing values and skills.
The story of Faith and CSP Obianom Vitalis serves as a powerful reminder that there are still good people within the Nigeria Police Force who are dedicated to their duties and the communities they serve.
While the Force as a whole may face challenges, individuals like CSP Obianom are working tirelessly to change perceptions and provide a beacon of hope for those in need.
It is crucial that stories like Faith’s are shared and celebrated, as they showcase the positive impact that compassionate police officers can have on the lives of citizens.
By highlighting the actions of DPO CSP Obianom Vitalis and the Karshi Police Division, we can inspire others within the Force to follow in their footsteps and strive to be a force for good in their communities.
