Guard Time Information (GTI), Human Rights Activists Nationwide, has strongly condemned the reported threat to the life of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing it as a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy and national stability.

The group in a press statement issued in Abuja by the chairman said any threat to a political leader, regardless of party affiliation, undermines democratic values and the rule of law. GTI emphasized that democracy must not be reduced to intimidation, harassment, or violence.

The organization called on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately deploy intelligence units to thoroughly investigate the alleged threat in Edo State and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted without delay.

“As a non-partisan human rights organization committed to the protection of democratic values and the fundamental rights of all Nigerians, we view this development with serious concern,” the statement read.

GTI warned that political rivalry should never translate into threats to life or acts capable of destabilizing the nation. It urged political parties and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns, healthy competition, and respect for opposing views.

The group further stressed that anyone found guilty, irrespective of status or political affiliation, must face the full weight of the law. “No individual is above the law, and justice must be served to deter future occurrences,” it stated.

Speaking in Abuja, GTI Chairman, Mr. Bibi Oduku, accompanied by legal practitioners and other human rights activists, called on security agencies to act swiftly and professionally to reassure Nigerians that their safety and democratic rights remain protected.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. Let us safeguard it together,” Oduku said.
