Despite False LG Election Victory, Mass Resignation Hits PDP in Kwara
The recent local government elections in Kwara State didn’t go without the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) laying claims to victory despite the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) declaring the candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) the winners.
However, recent reports from the party, particularly from Ifelodun Local Government, didn’t just expose the PDP’s false electoral victory but also indicate it is grappling with an internal crisis resulting in the resignation of a former youth leader, councillor and over 50 stakeholders.
Among those who have tendered their resignation letters to the party include Mr Jolayemi Segun, a former PDP ward youth leader and councillor; Faseluka Sunday, a Ward Secretary; Saheed Kayode, an assistant youth leader; Muideen Ganiyu, an Asst. Secretary, Akhaja Nimota Ibrahim, a former woman leader.
Others are Hajia Risikat Togunde, an immediate past woman leader, Ismaila Alado, the chairman of Igbaja zone A Okada circle, Ganiyu Yusuf, Jimoh Hammed, Hajia Kuburat Lawal, Lukman Arojo, Abiodun Awuni, former ward Secretary, Afeez Yusuph (Rooney), an organising Secretary, Oyewole Olawale (Morio), Azeez Lawal, Kafayat Mohammed and Toheeb Kayode.
The list also includes Nurudeen olayinka Akeem, the Ifelodun PDP PRO, Lukman Olatunji Yusuf, the Ora Ward Youth Leader and Chairman of all Youth Leaders, Yisa Jubril Babatunde, Alabi Olalekan Rafiu, Ayinla olatayo Rafiu, Odofin sakirat, Elemosoh Monruf, Azeez Nurudeen, Jimoh Lukuman, Bello kabiru, Yusuf olatunji Alabi, Nurudeen Kabirat, Wasiu Rasaki, Rasaki Serifat, and Mukaila Olawale Yusuf.
Rafiu zubair, Hammeed Yakubu, Balikis Yusuf, Lukman Fatimoh Bukunmi, Yusuf Tajudeen, Raheem Oladele, Yusuf Adeyanju Jamie, Lukman Suliyat, Rafiu Alao, Rauf Abata, Yusuf Monsurat, Issa Musa, Abdulquadir Yusuf, Akeem Alabi, Abdullahi Issa, Salaudeen Saka, Fatai Owoyale, Muhammad Haisat, Issa Baliqs and Muhammad Iyabo.
While the Kwara PDP boasts of returning to power in 2027 riding on the temporary economic crisis in the country, observers said the party is unpopular in the state because of its 16 years of rots. They added that another thing that will stand in the way of the PDP is an internal crisis, which deepens every day.
It would be recalled that several Kwara PDP leaders resigned their membership of the party immediately after the 2023 governorship election. While some of them didn’t disclose their reason for dumping the party for the APC, others claimed that their decision was influenced by the high-handedness of Mr Bukola Saraki and his refusal to account for the campaign funds.
