BREAKING: SUPREME COURT SACKS LABOUR PARTY CHAIRMAN
The apex court has nullified the recognition of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), marking a significant development in the party’s leadership crisis.
Delivering an unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court held that the Court of Appeal in Abuja lacked the jurisdiction to affirm Abure’s position as the party chairman, emphasising that the core issue of the dispute is party leadership (internal matter) which the judiciary has no authority over.
The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other party, declaring it meritorious.
In contrast, it dismissed the cross-appeal brought by the Abure-led faction of the party as unmeritorious.
“The issue before the lower court was clearly an internal affair of the party. The Court of Appeal had no jurisdiction to determine or make pronouncements on the leadership of a political party,” the justices stated.
This ruling effectively reverses an earlier judgment that had favoured Abure and may reignite the leadership tussle within the LP, particularly as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Observers say the decision underscores the Supreme Court’s consistent stance on non-interference on internal party matters and signals a call for political parties to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms.
Effort to reach the party for their reaction as at the time of filing this report is unsuccessful but Pan Afric Reporters will continue to making effort towards the party official statement on the ruling.
