By Hon. Adedayo Adeyemi.

In recent days, a perilous trend has emerged within our student politics, epitomized by the shocking allegations made by Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, the renegade group that is loyal to Atiku Abubakar who claims himself as the newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). While we have it on good authority that the recognized and official NANs President that was recently inaugurated is Comr. Olushola Oladoja (GCNS). I was shocked to read the news as I was present during the inauguration of Comr. Olushola Oladoja (GCNS).

His claims against Mr. Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging an attempted physical disruption of the NANS inauguration are deeply concerning. This incident transcends mere sensationalism; it reflects a broader problem in Nigerian politics namely, the weaponization of falsehoods and the dire consequences that follow. The ramifications of such accusations extend beyond individuals, jeopardizing the very fabric of student leadership and democratic expression.

The allegations made by this Comrade Isah, devoid of any substantial evidence no videos, no police reports, and minimal corroborating witness accounts point to a regrettable tendency to sensationalize political drama rather than engage in constructive discourse. In the age of digital communication, misinformation propagates alarmingly fast, often overshadowing the truth. This case is no exception. When a high-profile figure leverages fabricated charges to draw attention and engender division among student bodies, the implications are dire. It results in a climate of mistrust, where political motives overshadow genuine student concerns, leading to an erosion of faith in student leadership and governance.

The narrative surrounding this situation speaks volumes. Comrade Isah has chosen to start his tenure with a narrative built on personal vendetta masquerading as political accountability. This initial confrontation raises important questions about his leadership motivations. Is his priority the pursuit of truth and progress for Nigerian students, or is he more focused on generating drama and controversy? The optics of his actions suggest a pursuit of relevance through sensationalism, rather than through thoughtful dialogue focused on addressing pertinent issues facing students today.

Moreover, this episode is reflective of a troubling trend wherein student leaders leverage their platforms for baseless accusations instead of genuine advocacy. The age-old political maneuver discrediting opponents through false allegations has found its way into student politics, undermining the integrity of leadership roles that should inherently aim to promote unity and constructive engagement among the youth.

As we consider the implications of this unfortunate incident, there emerges a pressing need for a transformation in the way we engage in student politics. The culture of propagating falsehoods as a means of political leverage must be vigorously opposed. It is imperative for NANS and other student bodies to re-establish a commitment to integrity and accountability. Leadership should center on facts, empathy, and the genuine needs of students. The focus must shift towards substantive dialogue regarding educational reforms, mental health support, and socioeconomic challenges that affect students across Nigeria.

To facilitate this transformation, it is essential for student leaders to embrace values of transparency and responsible communication. We must urge all leaders to seek collaborative opportunities, rather than divisive tactics. By prioritizing truth and service, student organizations can reclaim their relevance and establish a culture of trust and respect among their constituents.

Looking ahead, the incident involving false accusations should serve as a critical juncture for both current and aspiring student leaders. There must be an unwavering commitment to fostering an environment conducive to constructive discussions and the exchange of ideas. As leaders, it is our duty to model ethical behavior and encourage a culture that rejects the allure of sensationalism in favor of truth and collaboration.

The way forward is clear: we must collectively choose responsibility over recklessness, unity over division, and truth over sensationalism. The future of the National Association of Nigerian Students lies in its ability to rise above the fray of falsehoods and manipulative narratives.

To all students, leaders, and stakeholders, I call upon you to hold our student leaders accountable. Let us demand a higher standard of discourse that prioritizes facts and serves the interests of the student body. Misinformation may spread quickly, but let us be staunch defenders of truth. Our motto as students should be to embrace leadership guided by integrity and purpose, for only then can we achieve meaningful progress and establish a unified front in the pursuit of a better future for all Nigerian students.

It is incumbent upon us to confront the danger posed by weaponized politics and falsehoods, lest we allow them to undermine the very ideals of leadership and community that we hold dear. Let us shine a light on truth and work towards healing the divisions that threaten our collective progress.
