Media Icon Honored: Comrade Paul Ella Abechi Celebrated for Transformative Leadership in Journalism

In a glowing tribute to a distinguished career marked by innovation, leadership, and dedication to journalism and national development, Comrade Paul Ella Abechi, former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council was celebrated for his exceptional contributions to journalism and nation-building.
The honour was bestowed on the refined and globally reputed media icon yesterday during the NUJ FCT Press Week Lecture & Awards, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and Society,” and was presented by His Excellency, Tanko Amakura CON, the immediate past governor of Nasarawa State.

In a congratulatory message by the former National Secretary of the NUJ, Shu’aibu Usman Leman, Comrade Abechi was lauded for a tenure that redefined union leadership and left an enduring legacy within the Nigerian media landscape.
“Your outstanding contributions to journalism and nation-building are truly commendable,”Leman stated.“ From securing international exchange programs to fostering dialogue between the media and the military, your efforts have not only strengthened professional capacity but also advanced national discourse.”
During his time as NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Abechi achieved several historic milestones, including facilitating Nigerian journalists’ participation in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States, organizing EU-sponsored training programs, and initiating the much-celebrated NUJ/Chinese Table Tennis Tournament, which boosted camaraderie and wellness among media professionals.
His tenure also saw unprecedented engagement with key national institutions, notably hosting the Chief of Army Staff and the FCT Minister, a bold moves that opened important channels of dialogue and cooperation between the media and security agencies.
Beyond his union responsibilities, Comrade Abechi’s roles across various media platforms have further amplified his influence, making him a respected voice in public discourse and a model for aspiring journalists.
“Your inspiring leadership and unwavering commitment to journalism and public service are deeply appreciated. Today, we celebrate not just your past achievements, but the lasting impact you have made on the profession and the nation,” Leman added.
