The pan Igbo socio-cultural organization has rejected calls by some presidential aspirants advocating for one term presidency, saying that such aspirants would never get support from the people of the Southeast.

This was contained in a press release issued inAbakaliki by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

According to him, Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly advocates for an Igbo Presidency, but not at the cost of compromising the principles of democratic governance.

The statement reads: “The Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, wishes to emphatically reiterate its unwavering commitment to the established constitutional framework of a two-term maximum tenure for the office of the President and State Governors, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This position is rooted in the principles of fairness, equity, and the advancement of democratic ideals.

“Therefore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo is compelled to address the Nigerian populace with the utmost candor, delivering an unvarnished truth and an uncomfortable message. It is a historical fact that since 1966, when Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi briefly held the position of Military Head of State for a mere six months, an Igbo person has not headed the Federal Government. While Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe served as a ceremonial President from 1963 to 1966, he held no executive powers.

“Considering this historical context, it would be a monumental injustice, both in the eyes of God and of humanity, if, upon the eventual election of an Igbo person to the Presidency under democratic auspices, that individual were to voluntarily limit their tenure to a single term of four years. This proposition is, to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, unacceptable.

“While acknowledging that an Igbo Presidency is a legitimate and achievable aspiration, Ohanaeze unequivocally states that it is not feasible in 2027. The organization believes that any individual currently advocating for a single-term Presidency is either driven by desperation, engaged in deceptive tactics, or employing cunning strategies for their own personal gain. Such an individual likely harbors ulterior motives.

“Ohanaeze recognizes that political aspirants are entitled to utilize various strategies to garner public support. However, we implore the Nigerian electorate to pose critical questions to those espousing the single-term Presidency concept.

“Specifically: If the Presidential Aspirant is proposing a single term in 2027, what is the fate of the only Governor under the same political party? Will this Governor, in deference to the proposed single-term principle, relinquish power in 2027 after a single term in office? Or, will the Governor seek re-election, thus exposing the hypocrisy inherent in the single-term proposition? Furthermore, what of the National Assembly members under the same party – are they also prepared to forgo re-election in 2027 to align with the single-term agenda?

“Should the answer to these crucial questions be affirmative – that the Governor intends to seek re-election – then Nigerians must unequivocally recognize that the proponent of this single-term Presidency in 2027 is employing a campaign strategy built upon falsehood, deception, and a fundamental lack of sincerity. It is a strategy doomed to fail.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly advocates for an Igbo Presidency, but not at the cost of compromising the principles of democratic governance. The organization supports a two-term Presidency for any Igbo person who is eventually elected. Any individual advancing the single-term Presidency concept therefore lacks the endorsement of Ndigbo. Such a Presidential Aspirant, on moral grounds, has effectively disqualified themselves from the 2027 presidential election.

“Those who promote the concept of a one-term presidency must demonstrate consistency within their own political party. They should present concrete examples of one-term Governors, one-term Senators, and one-term members of the House of Representatives to prove the sincerity of their commitment to this idea.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo categorically rejects the notion of a one-term Presidency, deeming it a deceptive and immature concept, a product of the delusional mindset of unserious presidential aspirants”, he stated.

Kama Dclared Winner Of Ohanivo APC Primaries, Asures Of More Democracy Dividends Alex Odeh Member representing Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo(Ohanivo)¹Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nkemkanma Kama, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the forthcoming general election, pledging to deliver more democratic dividends to his constituents. Speaking shortly after his victory at the party primaries, Kama expressed excitement and gratitude to party stakeholders, supporters and the state leadership for giving him another opportunity to serve. “I’m elated and very happy for being given another opportunity to serve my people. I’m grateful to all the stakeholders, our leaders, our constituents and most importantly our governor who stood by us throughout the process. Above all, I thank God for giving us this opportunity to serve again.” The lawmaker described the turnout and mobilisation witnessed during the primaries as only a glimpse of what to expect during the general elections. “This is nothing compared to what will happen during the general election,” Kama stated confidently. “This is just a piece of cake for what is going to happen during the election proper.” Kama assured constituents that his second term would usher in greater development and more opportunities for the constituency. According to him, his return to the National Assembly would strengthen the constituency’s chances of attracting more federal projects and benefits, especially as a ranking member of the House. “More development and more ability to attract goodies to our constituency is what our people should expect,” he said. “We have only done one budget, and now we are preparing for the second budget cycle. We’ll revisit communities we promised projects and ensure we fulfil those promises before moving forward.” He added that retaining experienced lawmakers was crucial to securing greater influence and benefits for the constituency. “A ranking member is a ranking member; you can’t buy that in the market,” he noted. “I believe our governor, being a former parliamentarian, understands the importance of having ranking lawmakers who can attract more development to the constituency.” Also speaking after the primaries, Ebonyi State Commissioner for ICT, Tochukwu Okorie, said the massive turnout and patience of party supporters reflected the confidence of the people in the APC. “I align myself with the feelings of my people. When you look at the crowd and the fact that they have waited here since morning, it shows they are happy and satisfied with the party.”, he said. Reacting to questions about possible opposition challenges ahead of the general election, the commissioner dismissed fears, insisting the APC remained firmly rooted among the people. The APC primaries in the Ohanivo Federal Constituency recorded a large turnout of party faithful and supporters, setting the stage for what promises to be a keenly contested general election
