The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three men in connection with separate cases of defilement of minors in Eziowelle, Oba, and Ogidi communities of the state.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Gender Unit have gathered evidence to prosecute the suspects, who are currently in custody.

The first incident occurred on August 19, 2025, when police operatives attached to Oba Division arrested one Ihechiluru Okorie for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl. The suspect reportedly confessed to having unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim when she visited his barbershop.

In a separate case, on August 13, 2025, officers from the Eziowelle Division apprehended Chidubem Udem, aged 28, for allegedly defiling a 5-year-old girl at her grandmother’s house. Investigations revealed that Udem forcibly assaulted the minor, who was later taken to hospital where medical examination confirmed the defilement.

Similarly, on August 28, 2025, Ogidi Division operatives arrested Kalu Ilo, aged 30, over the alleged defilement of his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter, who is said to be mentally challenged. Preliminary findings indicated that the suspect took advantage of the girl when he visited her home in Nkpor.

SP Ikenga confirmed that all three suspects will be charged to court on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the incidents, assuring that the command is committed to ensuring diligent prosecution and justice for the victims. He further called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report any cases of sexual or gender-based violence.

“The Command remains committed to protecting the rights of children and vulnerable persons across Anambra State,” Ikenga quoted the CP as saying.
