Sin is the root cause of idolatry. We become what we worship. True worship leads to transformation of life and destiny, while false worship, which is idolatry; results in self-destruction, incurring God’s judgment. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden were created in God’s image, to represent Him on earth in all their thoughts and actions. God created humanity to remain wholly dependent on Him and to represent Him faithfully on earth. But the serpent trickily cajoled Eve to eat of the forbidden fruits, and she succumbed. Adam, too, did not hold fast to God’s promises, and he quickly followed suit.

The first effect of that sin of disobedience was that; they “realized they were naked (Gen 3:7). Sin stripes one of his/her covering. Sin exposes one to danger. Sin is separation from God. The consequences of sin are outright rejection by God. The moment Adam and Eve fell into sin, their allegiance to God was shifted. Consequently, they were driven from the Garden; the paradise of comfort, provisions, protection and absolute security, into the world of hardships, struggles, and agony. How terrible it is to fall into the hands of God! It is possible for the children of God (the very elect), to engage in idolatry. That is why the Bible warns us, “little children, guard yourselves from idols” (1 Jn. 5: 21). When we tend to satisfy our sinful desires over God’s desires and His will, we commit the sin of idolatry. When we tend to worship at the altar of self-interest, greed, personal achievement, personal security and self- satisfaction, we commit idolatry.

We can guard ourselves from falling into idolatry when we make a lifetime commitment to God in which we bring our life under His directives. Being devoted to God, and constantly using God’s word to guide our thinking and behavior. Surround ourselves with Christian friends who will help us in our daily spiritual walk with the Lord. The Bible says, “Bad association corrupt good morals” (1 Cor. 15: 33). Another passage says:- “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend “(Pro 27: 17). Make time to worship the Lord daily, because a heart that is satisfied with God, will not seek lesser beings or things to fill the void that occurs when we turn away from Him.
