Chairman of the Nationwide League One (NLO), H.E. Silas Agara, has called on the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to prioritize factual reporting and steer clear of sensationalism in their journalism.
Agara made this appeal during the closing ceremony of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of SWAN @60, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday.
The week-long event commemorating SWAN’s 60th anniversary was marked by a series of noteworthy activities, including the inauguration of organizing committees, public lectures, an awards ceremony, and media partnerships with various organizations.
With the theme “The Power of Sports Media: Honoring Its Legacy and Shaping the Future,” the Diamond Jubilee drew prominent figures from both the sports and media sectors across the country.
The participants at the event discussed critical issues surrounding integrity in sports reporting and explored ways to use sports as a catalyst for economic growth through a five-point development framework.
During the closing ceremony, notable sons of Nasarawa State were honored for their contributions to sports activities.
Among them were the former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, H.E. Silas Agara, and the State SWAN Chairman, Smah George.
In his remarks, NLO Chairman Agara expressed his appreciation for SWAN’s role in using their platform to inform the public about developments in the sports sector.
He stressed the importance of maintaining credibility in media reporting, stating that it is essential for both national unity and the advancement of sports in the country.
