Works Ministry Sports Club Kicks Off 2026 Sports Week, Secures N5m Support for Magazine

The Federal Ministry of Works Sports Club has commenced its 2026 Sports Week with renewed management backing, including a N5 million pledge from former Senator Yakubu Lado towards the publication of its Sport Waves magazine.
The development was contained in a press release issued by the Director, Information and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed A. Ahmed, on Monday, August 31, 2026, following the commencement of activities marking the Sports Week.
The Sports Week, according to the Ministry, is designed to promote physical fitness, staff welfare, teamwork, unity, sportsmanship and excellence among employees, while providing an avenue for the Ministry’s workforce to interact beyond their routine official duties.
As part of the opening activities, officials and members of the Sports Club embarked on courtesy visits to senior management officials of the Ministry to appreciate their continued support for sports development and staff welfare.
Receiving the delegation, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, commended the Sports Club for its achievements and contributions to the image of the Ministry through its participation in various sporting competitions.
Goronyo assured the Club of the Ministry’s continued support, stressing that sporting activities were important not only for winning trophies but also for maintaining the physical and mental well-being of workers.
“The achievements of the Sports Club are not only about winning trophies. They are also about promoting the physical and mental well-being of our staff, because a healthy workforce is essential to the effective discharge of our responsibilities,” the Minister said.
He urged members of the Club to sustain their commitment and continue projecting the Ministry positively at national and inter-ministerial sporting competitions.
The delegation also visited the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary (DOOPS), Alhaji Aminu Ahmed, who expressed his willingness to support the Club’s activities within available resources.
Ahmed welcomed plans to host future sporting activities in Kano, his home state, and promised to provide the necessary support and hospitality within his capacity.
He also expressed commitment to addressing some of the challenges facing the Sports Club, while acknowledging the financial constraints confronting the Ministry.
The Director of Human Resource Management and Chairman of the Federal Ministry of Works Sports Club, Malam Ahmad Muhammad Tukur, thanked the Ministry’s management for its continued support and urged members to maintain discipline, teamwork and dedication.
Tukur said the achievements of the Club represented not only its members but the entire Federal Ministry of Works.
“We must remain committed to excellence, discipline and the spirit of sportsmanship. Whatever we achieve as a Club is a reflection of the Federal Ministry of Works,” he said.
The Sports Club also commended the Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, and the Minister of State, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, for their encouragement of sporting activities and commitment to staff welfare.
A major highlight of the opening was the launch of the Club’s Sport Waves magazine, which received financial support from former Senator Yakubu Lado in collaboration with the Director, Highways, Bridges and Design (B&D), Engr. Musa Saidu.
Lado pledged N5 million towards the publication of the magazine and also promised to advertise his company in its next edition.
The Sports Club described the gesture as a major boost to its efforts to promote sporting activities, document its achievements and strengthen its relationship with stakeholders.
Speaking on the activities, the Sports Manager, Mr. Fakande Ayorinde Adeniyi, said the decision to commence the Sports Week with courtesy visits was a demonstration of appreciation and respect for the Ministry’s leadership and other supporters.
Adeniyi said the Club would continue to work closely with management to sustain its achievements and further enhance the image of the Ministry.
The Assistant Sports Manager, Mr. Tayo Omotosho, also thanked the Ministry’s management and other supporters, saying their encouragement had boosted members’ morale and inspired them to achieve more.
He assured the Ministry’s leadership that the Club would remain committed to excellence and positive representation of the Federal Ministry of Works at sporting engagements.
The 2026 Sports Week is expected to feature various sporting and fitness activities aimed at promoting healthy living, friendship, teamwork and unity among staff.
The Sports Club reaffirmed its commitment to using sports as a platform for staff development, physical fitness, team spirit and the positive projection of the Federal Ministry of Works.
