Beyond Assistance: Doro Unveils Nigeria’s Push to Move Vulnerable Households from Poverty to Shared Prosperity

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, has said Nigeria is intensifying efforts to move vulnerable citizens beyond humanitarian assistance into sustainable livelihoods, resilience and shared prosperity.
The position was contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on Friday, September 25, 2026, following Doro’s participation in a high-level side event at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The minister, who conveyed the side event titled “Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity,” said the Federal Government was working with relevant stakeholders to create sustainable pathways through which vulnerable Nigerians could exit poverty.
According to him, humanitarian interventions must go beyond immediate relief by empowering vulnerable households to become resilient and self-reliant.
Doro said, “Vulnerable households also need credible pathways to resilience, self-reliance and shared prosperity,” stressing that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction would continue to strengthen interventions aimed at reducing poverty and improving the living conditions of vulnerable Nigerians.
He further said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was committed to addressing poverty through interventions designed not only to provide immediate support but also to create opportunities for sustainable development.
The high-level side event was convened in partnership with Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), IQS and the Learning Economic Foundation, bringing together government officials, development partners and experts to examine practical approaches to poverty reduction and protection.
Messages were delivered by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Hajiya Amina J. Mohammed, represented by Mr. Mohamed Yahya; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and IOM Deputy Director-General, Operations, Ms. Ugochi Daniels, among other experts.
The participants emphasised the importance of strengthening humanitarian systems while building durable pathways out of vulnerability, with a common position that “humanitarian assistance must save lives.”
The ministry said the discussions further reinforced the need for coordinated interventions that combine humanitarian protection, poverty reduction and economic empowerment as part of efforts to build a more resilient and inclusive society.
