The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a major overhaul of the Police Monitoring Unit, appointing Aliyu Abubakar as its new head in a move aimed at strengthening discipline, transparency, and operational efficiency within the Force.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the statement, the restructuring is part of ongoing institutional reforms designed to reposition the Monitoring Unit as a more effective internal accountability mechanism capable of addressing operational lapses and inefficiencies.

“The restructuring is necessitated by the need to refocus the Unit on its core mandate and reposition it as a credible and effective internal oversight mechanism within the Force,” the statement said.

The revamped unit is expected to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments nationwide.

As part of the reorganisation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar  has been appointed to lead the Monitoring Team, bringing his wealth of experience in criminal investigations and operational leadership to the role.

Prior to his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the FCT and Rivers State Commands, where he handled several high-profile cases and contributed to modernising investigative processes.

The Inspector-General emphasised that the reform is central to ongoing efforts to entrench professionalism within the Force.

“The Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels,” Disu stated.

The police leadership further reiterated its commitment to sustained reforms and institutional development.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to building a more accountable, professional, and citizen-focused policing system,” the statement added.

Observers say the restructuring signals a renewed push by the Force leadership to strengthen internal oversight and restore public confidence through improved transparency and discipline.
