Umahi Leads Intervention on Benin-Agbor-Asaba, Ifaki-Kabba Routes as Tinubu Orders Emergency Road Repairs

The Federal Government has ordered immediate intervention on the distressed Benin-Agbor-Asaba and Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti roads, following mounting difficulties faced by motorists and commuters, with Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, personally leading efforts to restore movement along the critical corridors.
The development was disclosed in a statement signed by Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of Works (Media), on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for urgent action on the affected roads.
According to the statement, Umahi has activated an emergency response mechanism involving officials of the Federal Ministry of Works and other stakeholders to address the deteriorating conditions while longer-term solutions are developed.
The minister said President Tinubu had directed his ministry to act swiftly to ease the hardship being experienced by road users who have reportedly spent several hours and, in some cases, days navigating the affected routes.
“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.
Minister Deploys Team to Ekiti, Kogi
In line with the directive, Umahi directed the Minister of State for Works, Rt. Hon. Bello Goronyo, to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis spanning Ekiti and Kogi states to assess the situation and commence urgent remedial works.
The ministry said the intervention was already underway as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, with officials deployed to the affected locations to begin assessing and addressing the immediate challenges.
While the intervention team moved into Ekiti and Kogi states, Umahi personally travelled to Benin, Edo State, accompanied by members of the National Assembly Works Committees, to coordinate a similar emergency response on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.
The Benin engagement is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other relevant stakeholders.
The meeting is aimed at identifying immediate measures to ease the hardship faced by motorists while developing a sustainable solution to the deteriorating road infrastructure.
Umahi also accepted responsibility for the difficulties being experienced by road users and apologised to commuters who have been stranded or subjected to prolonged delays on the affected corridors.
The minister assured motorists and other road users that the Federal Government’s intervention would not be limited to temporary measures.
He said immediate remedial actions would be pursued alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.
The emergency intervention underscores the Federal Government’s renewed focus on addressing critical road infrastructure challenges affecting economic activities, movement of people and goods, and the safety and welfare of Nigerians across the affected states.
