Nigeria Loses Top Diplomat as Foreign Ministry Mourns

Nigeria’s diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a senior envoy, Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele, whose passing has been described as a major loss to the nation’s foreign service and international engagements.
Ambassador Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, after a protracted illness, bringing an abrupt end to a distinguished career marked by service, intellect, and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the late diplomat was until his death the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division and had recently been appointed Ambassador-Designate to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Ambassador Lele was a graduate of Economics from Bayero University, Kano, and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. Over the years, he served in key diplomatic missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, earning a reputation for professionalism and strategic insight.
Reacting to the loss, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, described the late envoy as an exceptional officer whose contributions would be deeply missed.
“He was a hardworking, humble and fine officer, who will be sorely missed by the Ministry,” he said.
The Ministry noted that Ambassador Lele was widely respected for his intellectual depth and unwavering dedication to advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
“His sudden demise is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.
His remains were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by top officials of the Ministry before being conveyed to Kano, where he was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Ministry extended its condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
