The Federal Government has launched a far-reaching gender policy aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s agricultural sector, closing long-standing inequality gaps, and accelerating food security through inclusive, gender-responsive reforms across the agrifood system.

The disclosure was contained in a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and signed by Obe M. Mabel, Assistant Chief Information Officer, for the Head of the Department of Information, on May 6, 2026.

The policy, known as the Revised National Gender Policy on Agrifood Systems Transformation (NGPAST) 2025–2030, was formally validated in Abuja in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria and other development partners, marking a significant milestone in efforts to drive inclusivity and sustainable agricultural development.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, represented by the Minister of State, Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, described the policy as a “practical framework” to ensure fair access to resources and opportunities for both men and women.

According to him, “The policy will strengthen the integration of gender-responsive approaches across agricultural programmes and interventions, which is key to unlocking the full potential of the sector.”

He stressed that while agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economy—supporting food security, employment, and growth—gender disparities continue to hinder productivity, particularly among women who play critical roles across the value chain.

Kyari noted that the initiative aligns with broader reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that inclusivity is now a core pillar of government interventions in the sector.

Also speaking, Senator Abdullahi highlighted ongoing programmes designed to empower women and youth, including the “Every Home a Garden” initiative implemented in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

He said, “Flagship interventions such as the Renewed Hope Mechanization Programme have prioritised inclusivity, with women farmers among the first set of beneficiaries.”

The Minister further disclosed that the Renewed Hope Cooperative Revamp Programme is expanding access to agricultural services for smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, represented by Mr. Abana Waziri Abba, said the policy would address structural barriers limiting gender inclusion and productivity.

“This policy will strengthen coordination, improve access to inputs, and enhance the participation of vulnerable groups in agribusiness,” he said.

The Ministry also acknowledged the contributions of development partners including ActionAid Nigeria, AGRA, and GIZ in shaping the policy framework.

Stakeholders at the event, including representatives of the Governors’ Forum and civil society organisations, pledged support for the effective implementation of the policy.

The highlight of the engagement was the official launch of the NGPAST document and its Strategic Plan of Action for 2025–2030, which is expected to guide Nigeria’s transition to a more inclusive, resilient, and productive agrifood system.
