The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered an immediate nationwide audit of arms and ammunition across all police commands and formations as part of sweeping reforms aimed at tightening accountability and strengthening operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.

The directive was issued during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the media held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Details of the development were contained in a press statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on May 6, 2026.

According to the statement, the audit exercise is designed to ensure proper documentation, secure handling, and effective deployment of police arms and ammunition in line with national security objectives.

IGP Disu stressed that the exercise goes beyond routine administrative procedures, describing it as a critical institutional measure aimed at preventing misuse of police assets and identifying operational gaps within the Force.

“The audit exercise is aimed at strengthening accountability, identifying operational gaps, preventing misuse of Police assets, and enhancing the overall operational readiness of the Nigeria Police Force,” the Inspector-General stated.

He directed all Commissioners of Police to ensure that the audit process is conducted thoroughly, transparently, and professionally, with comprehensive reports to be submitted to the Force Headquarters within the stipulated timeline.

The police chief reiterated his administration’s commitment to reforms centred on accountability, professionalism, transparency, and stronger internal control systems.

According to him, ongoing reforms under his leadership are targeted at building a disciplined, efficient, and accountable police institution capable of responding effectively to emerging security threats across the country.

“The exercise is not a routine administrative procedure, but a critical institutional measure designed to ensure that all arms and ammunition entrusted to the Force are properly documented, secured, and optimally deployed in line with operational standards and national security objectives,” Disu emphasized.

The latest directive comes amid intensified efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to reposition the institution through improved operational standards, internal discipline, and enhanced public confidence in policing nationwide.
