A former National Assembly candidate of the Labour Party, Dr Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has declared that he remains committed to the party because of its ideology rooted in equal opportunity, social justice, integrity and competent leadership.

Ezeh made the declaration while speaking with journalists in Abuja amid growing political realignments and speculations surrounding internal debates within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Labour Party stalwart dismissed claims of a zoning crisis within the party, describing such narratives as politically motiva ted attempts by some actors to introduce old political traditions into what he called a “progressive political movement.”

According to him, the Labour Party was founded on principles that prioritize merit, inclusiveness and accountable leadership rather than sectional interests.

“I am still in the Labour Party because I believe in its ideology; equal opportunity, social justice, integrity and competence. These are my core beliefs,” he stated.

Ezeh argued that zoning arrangements have not significantly strengthened Nigeria’s democratic process, insisting that leadership positions should be determined by competence, vision and capacity to deliver democratic dividends to the people.

He maintained that the country’s political future would be better served by issue-based politics and credible leadership recruitment rather than ethnic or regional considerations.

The former federal lawmaker hopeful further noted that attempts to frame internal party conversations around zoning were unnecessary distractions capable of undermining the ideological foundation of the Labour Party.

He accused some politicians of attempting to import “old habits into a new political culture,” stressing that Nigerians, especially the youth population, are demanding a new style of governance anchored on transparency, accountability and social equity.

Speaking on speculation surrounding his possible political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections, Dr Ezeh said consultations and calls from supporters across different political blocs and interest groups were ongoing, but emphasized that he would be guided strictly by principle and national interest.

“I am still studying the political terrain. My decisions are guided by principle, not ambition,” he said.

He, however, reiterated his commitment to the advancement of democratic values, good governance and policies capable of improving the welfare of Nigerians irrespective of political affiliations.
