The Federal Government has signed fresh agreements with two major construction firms to accelerate delivery of key legacy road projects across Nigeria, in a move aimed at boosting connectivity, economic growth, and national integration.
This was contained in a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Works and signed by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Information and Public Relations.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the agreements with Messrs Hitech Africa Limited and Infiouest International Limited as a significant milestone under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“These projects are not just road projects; they are investments that will stimulate economic growth, improve connectivity, and enhance national development and integration,” Umahi said.
The agreements cover critical road infrastructure including sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Calabar-Ebonyi-Abuja Superhighway, and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri corridor.
Umahi noted that despite initial skepticism surrounding some of the projects, tangible progress has proven their viability and importance.
“When we started the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, many doubted its feasibility, but today the project has become a beauty to behold and an economic catalyst for Nigeria,” he stated.
He explained that some sections of the projects, particularly in coastal and swampy terrains, involve complex engineering requiring extensive excavation and reinforcement.
“This is not an ordinary road project. It is an investment that will last for 100 years with minimal maintenance,” the Minister added.
Highlighting funding arrangements, Umahi disclosed that the Federal Government would provide 30 percent counterpart funding, while the remaining financing would be sourced through structured arrangements, with tolling planned upon completion to ensure sustainability.
He also emphasized that the projects reflect equitable infrastructure distribution across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
On his part, the Managing Director of Hitech Africa Limited, Dany Abboud, assured the government of timely delivery and adherence to global standards.
“Hitech remains fully committed to delivering these projects to international standards, even better than what has already been achieved,” he said.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Rafiu Adeladan, described the projects as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape.
“What we are doing today represents the President’s commitment to changing the face of infrastructure in Nigeria,” he said, expressing confidence that the projects would be delivered within stipulated timelines.
Further details provided by the Director of Highways, Bridges and Design, Musa Sa’idu, indicated that the projects include an 82.8-kilometre dual carriageway segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Akwa Ibom State, about 180 kilometres of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, and approximately 125 kilometres on the Gombe-Biu axis.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering durable and economically impactful infrastructure, noting that the projects are central to driving long-term growth and national development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
