The Federal Government has announced the postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.

The announcement was contained in a press statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and signed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.

According to the statement, the decision to postpone the international conference followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the high-profile gathering.

While no new date was announced, the government assured stakeholders that details of the rescheduled conference would be communicated in due course.

“The Federal Government deeply regrets any inconvenience this postponement may cause and appreciates the understanding, support, and continued cooperation of all stakeholders,” the statement said.

The conference was expected to bring together global leaders, policymakers, health experts, researchers, development partners and civil society organizations to advance collective efforts against antimicrobial resistance, one of the most pressing public health threats worldwide.

Despite the postponement, the government reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to hosting the global event and sustaining momentum in the fight against antimicrobial resistance through a coordinated One Health approach.

“Nigeria remains honoured to host this important global gathering and reaffirms its commitment to advancing international collaboration and collective action to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach,” the statement added.

The Federal Government expressed appreciation to the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on AMR, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, member states, development partners, international organisations, academia, youth networks, civil society groups and other stakeholders for their continued support and collaboration.

Authorities also disclosed that preparatory activities for the conference would continue under the supervision of the Local Organising Committee and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government to ensure a successful event when a new date is fixed.

The government stressed that antimicrobial resistance remains a major global health challenge requiring sustained commitment, coordinated action and stronger international cooperation.

“Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most significant global health challenges of our time, requiring sustained commitment and coordinated action across countries and sectors. Nigeria looks forward to welcoming delegates to Abuja for the rescheduled Conference and to advancing collective global action against AMR,” the statement noted.

The conference was expected to serve as a critical platform for reviewing global progress, strengthening partnerships and mobilising action to curb the growing threat posed by drug-resistant infections, which continue to undermine healthcare systems and public health outcomes across the world.
