FG Launches Free TV Platform, Targets Massive Job Creation and Digital Broadcasting Revolution
By Pan Afric Reporters
The Federal Government has officially launched Nigeria’s long-awaited Digital Switch Over (DSO) Free TV platform, unveiling what it described as a transformative broadcasting initiative capable of creating thousands of jobs, boosting local content production, expanding digital access, and unlocking new opportunities across the creative and communications sectors.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation.
Speaking at the official launch held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s broadcasting history and a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation agenda.
According to the Minister, the Digital Switch Over project extends beyond a technological upgrade and represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s economic future.
“A fully implemented DSO ecosystem will create jobs, stimulate local manufacturing, expand audience reach, strengthen content production, increase advertising opportunities, and unlock new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators,” Idris stated.
He explained that the launch reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to innovation, infrastructure development, economic growth, and the modernization of critical sectors of the economy.
“This launch is not merely a broadcasting milestone; it is part of a broader national effort by the Federal Government to build a more connected, more competitive, and more prosperous Nigeria,” he added.
Stakeholders Back Digital Transition
The Minister disclosed that extensive consultations were held with major stakeholders across the broadcasting value chain ahead of the launch, including broadcasters, signal distributors, set-top box manufacturers, content producers, regulators, and industry associations.
According to him, despite differing views on some implementation issues, stakeholders unanimously reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the successful rollout of the programme.
“One important message emerged clearly from that engagement: all stakeholders remain united in their commitment to the successful implementation of the Digital Switch Over programme in Nigeria,” he said.
Hybrid Broadcasting Model
Addressing concerns surrounding the implementation process, Idris clarified that the DSO programme is not intended to replace existing technologies but to integrate multiple platforms for wider access and efficiency.
He said Nigeria would adopt a hybrid broadcasting framework combining Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite services, and digital application-based platforms.
“Digital Terrestrial Television remains an integral component of Nigeria’s digital broadcasting framework. What we are pursuing is a hybrid broadcasting model that combines DTT, Direct-to-Home satellite delivery, and digital application-based platforms,” the Minister explained.
He further emphasized that indigenous technology, local manufacturing, and Nigerian creativity would remain central to the implementation strategy.
“The DSO must create opportunities for Nigerian businesses, Nigerian innovators, and Nigerian workers,” he said.
DSO Key to Nigeria’s Digital Economy Vision
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the DSO initiative as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.
According to him, the programme aligns with President Tinubu’s ambition of building a one-trillion-dollar economy through strategic investments in digital infrastructure.
“The DSO is one of the first visible outcomes of our broader digital infrastructure strategy aimed at building a one-trillion-dollar economy,” Tijani said.
He revealed that the Federal Government is currently pursuing plans to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure nationwide and launch two additional satellites to strengthen Nigeria’s communications capabilities.
New Era for Broadcasting
In separate remarks, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the launch as a turning point for Nigeria’s media and communications landscape.
Ebuebu noted that the platform goes beyond television broadcasting and serves as a strategic national communications infrastructure.
“This is more than a television platform; it is a national communications architecture designed to expand access to information, education and digital opportunities for all Nigerians,” he said.
Egerton-Idehen added that the satellite-powered platform would help bridge connectivity gaps, support content creators, attract investors, and strengthen Nigeria’s position as Africa’s leading digital broadcasting hub.
National Assembly Applauds Initiative
The Special Guest of Honour and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, hailed the launch as a landmark national achievement.
According to him, the project demonstrates the impact of collaboration between government institutions and industry stakeholders.
“This initiative will expand access to quality broadcasting services, create jobs, stimulate investment and unlock new opportunities across the media and creative sectors,” Kalu said.
He noted that the successful rollout of the platform aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision of creating a more connected, competitive and prosperous economy.
The event attracted top government officials and industry leaders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Binyerem C. Ukaire; the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare; the Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, Senior High Chief Tony Akiotu; and heads of major broadcasting agencies and regulatory bodies.
With the official unveiling of the Free TV platform, the Federal Government says Nigeria is now positioned to accelerate its transition to a fully digital broadcasting ecosystem, expand access to information, and unlock significant economic opportunities across the media, technology, and creative industries.
