The Apex Igbo sociocultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on the Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Party, NDC and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi to provide evidence of the alleged threat to his life and perceived attempts to undermine his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, which affirms that the safety of every Nigerian citizen, particularly individuals participating in national political affairs, is a matter of utmost importance that must never be ignored,
maintains that allegations bothering on threats to life are serious national security matters that require credible evidence, proper documentation, and immediate professional investigation.

It further challenges Mr. Peter Obi to provide verifiable details surrounding his allegations, while urging relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial assessment on the claims made by Peter Obi.

According to the group, the protection of presidential aspirants and major political stakeholders is the responsibility of the Nigerian state and must not be influenced by any political considerations.

“The organisation consequently calls on the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that all presidential contenders, including Mr. Peter Obi, are provided with appropriate security arrangements as the nation prepares for the 2027 electoral process.

“A democratic society cannot thrive where political actors operate under fear, uncertainty, or threats to their personal safety. The security of candidates must therefore remain a national priority beyond party lines and political differences.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasises that while every allegation of insecurity deserves attention, public claims involving threats to life must be handled with responsibility and transparency.

“The organisation warns that unverified accusations can create unnecessary tension, deepen political suspicion, and distract from the genuine responsibility of security institutions to identify and neutralise actual threats.

“Accordingly, Mr. Peter Obi is encouraged to cooperate fully with security agencies by providing all relevant information required for a comprehensive investigation.” It added

Disclosing this in a statement, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Deputy Secretary General
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the group, which notes that Nigeria has continued to face complex security challenges across different regions of the country advised prominent political figures to take personal security precautions and maintain close cooperation with authorised security institutions.

The organisation also advises Mr. Obi and other political leaders to avoid unnecessary security exposure and ensure that appropriate protective measures are adopted at all times.

“Security consciousness is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a demonstration of responsibility expected from individuals occupying important positions in national affairs.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo recalls the unfortunate events of 29th July 1966, when Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria’s first military Head of State of Igbo extraction, lost his life during a period of political and military upheaval.

“The tragedy of that era remains a solemn reminder that leaders must combine political engagement with careful security judgment, particularly during periods of heightened national tension.

“History has repeatedly shown that trust, loyalty, and political relationships must always be balanced with vigilance, sound judgment, and responsible security planning.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide reiterates that the organisation stands firmly for peace, democracy, justice, and the protection of every Nigerian citizen.”

The organisation emphasized the need for a transparent investigation into Mr. Peter Obi’s allegations, adequate security protection for all political actors, and a political environment where every candidate can participate freely without intimidation or fear.

“The 2027 electoral process must be guided by civility, fairness, national stability, and respect for the rule of law.” It concludes
