FG Moves to Transform Nigerian Army University Biu into Africa’s Premier Military Technology Hub
Defence Minister unveils plans for infrastructure upgrade, first-of-its-kind military performance management centre

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) into a world-class institution for specialised military education, research and technological innovation, with plans to upgrade critical infrastructure and establish Africa’s first Centre for Military Performance Management.
The pledge was made by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, during a meeting with the University’s Governing Council at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, where he stressed that strengthening the institution remains central to Nigeria’s efforts to build a highly skilled workforce capable of addressing emerging security threats.
The position was contained in a press statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Defence and signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde.
According to the Minister, the Nigerian Army University Biu occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s national security architecture by providing specialised training and technical expertise required to confront increasingly complex security challenges.
General Musa disclosed that the Ministry of Defence would work closely with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to maximise the 30 per cent admission quota reserved for military personnel, ensuring that more service members acquire advanced academic and technological skills.
“As the Federal Government pushes for a highly skilled workforce in this digital era, we must encourage members of the Armed Forces, ministry staff, and the general public to leverage the cutting-edge technological and academic solutions available at NAUB,” the Minister said.
He explained that expanding access to the university’s specialised programmes would help bridge critical skills gaps within Nigeria’s defence and security sector while supporting broader national development objectives.
A major highlight of the meeting was the decision by the Ministry and the University’s Governing Council to fast-track the upgrade of facilities on the campus, including the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre for Military Performance Management, described as the first of its kind on the African continent.
The proposed centre is expected to enhance military research, performance evaluation and strategic capacity development, positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in defence education and innovation.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Pioneer Pro-Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University Biu, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), CFR, commended General Musa for his leadership and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence sector.
Buratai praised the Minister’s strategic vision, noting that his contributions continue to reinforce the country’s defence architecture.
“Your tenacious leadership and strategic foresight continue to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture,” Buratai said.
He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, research and national service, assuring the Minister that the institution would continue to support efforts aimed at producing highly skilled manpower for the Armed Forces and the nation at large.
The renewed Federal Government commitment is expected to further strengthen the capacity of the Nigerian Army University Biu to deliver quality military and civilian education while contributing to Nigeria’s drive for enhanced national security, technological advancement and human capital development.
