IGP Disu hails champion’s triumph, says victory reflects Nigeria Police’s investment in sports development and personnel welfare

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has celebrated the outstanding performance of Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, who clinched the gold medal in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the feat as a testament to discipline, resilience and the Force’s commitment to developing sporting excellence among its personnel.
Nathaniel stormed to victory on Friday night with a commanding run, crossing the finish line in 48.47 seconds to secure the Commonwealth title and deliver one of Nigeria’s most memorable athletics performances at the Games.
The commendation was contained in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, ANIPR, on August 1, 2026.
Reacting to the achievement, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, congratulated Corporal Nathaniel for bringing honour to both Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force on the international stage.
“Corporal Nathaniel has flown both the national and Force flags high on the international stage. His performance serves as an example of excellence to officers across all commands,” the IGP said.
The Police leadership noted that Nathaniel’s latest triumph marks a remarkable improvement from his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, describing his journey as a reflection of grit, tactical discipline and unwavering determination.
According to the Force, the gold medal is also evidence of the institutional support being provided to athletes under the current administration of the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement explained that Nathaniel’s success aligns with the Inspector-General’s strategic agenda on Police Sports Development, Personnel Welfare and Capacity Building, which prioritises the discovery, nurturing and promotion of sporting talents within the Force.
“Nathaniel’s success aligns with the IGP’s Strategic Agenda on Police Sports Development, Personnel Welfare and Capacity Building. Under the current leadership, the Force continues to prioritise the discovery, nurturing and support of athletic talent within its ranks,” the statement said.
The Force added that sports remain an integral component of tactical fitness, personnel morale and positive youth engagement, stressing that continued investment in athletics and other sporting activities will further enhance the professional development of officers.
On behalf of the management, officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Disu extended warm congratulations to Corporal Nathaniel and wished him greater success in future international competitions.
“The Inspector-General of Police warmly congratulates Corporal Nathaniel on this remarkable achievement and wishes him continued success in his sporting career,” the statement added.
