Nigeria Police Strengthens Counter-Terrorism Capacity as Officers Complete UN-Sponsored Training in Morocco
IGP Disu says advanced investigative skills will boost fight against terrorism, transnational crime and enhance global security cooperation

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has concluded a specialised international counter-terrorism investigations training programme in the Kingdom of Morocco, with Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu reaffirming the Force’s commitment to building a modern, intelligence-driven police institution capable of tackling terrorism, violent extremism and transnational organised crime.
The three-week programme, held in Rabat from July 13 to 31, 2026, equipped Nigerian police officers with advanced investigative skills designed to improve intelligence-led operations, dismantle terrorist networks and strengthen international security cooperation.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, anipr, on July 31, 2026.
According to the statement, the Specialized Training on Counter-Terrorism Investigations Train-the-Trainer Programme was organised by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) under its Global Counter-Terrorism Investigations Programme in partnership with Al Akhawayn University.
The programme brought together law enforcement officers from Nigeria, Kenya and Burkina Faso to strengthen institutional cooperation and enhance professional capacity in combating terrorism, violent extremism and other transnational crimes.
The Nigeria Police delegation, comprising ten officers and led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Favour Fadawa of the Nigeria Police Academy, participated in intensive sessions focused on intelligence-led investigations, identifying terrorist networks, disrupting criminal organisations, preserving admissible evidence and promoting accountability within the rule of law.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, IGP Disu stressed that effective counter-terrorism investigations remain a critical component of both national and global security.
“Effective counter-terrorism investigations remain central to national and global security efforts. The knowledge and skills acquired from the programme will significantly enhance the operational capacity of the Force in combating evolving security threats and complex transnational criminal networks,” the IGP said.
The police chief directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Development, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, PhD, FCNA, and the Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy to immediately institutionalise the knowledge gained from the programme across the Force.
He also disclosed that arrangements for the accreditation and commencement of the proposed Executive Master’s Programme at the Nigeria Police Academy had reached an advanced stage, describing the initiative as another step towards strengthening professional policing in Nigeria.
The IGP commended the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Al Akhawayn University and the participating countries for organising the programme, while expressing appreciation to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco for their hospitality.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to building a modern, intelligence-driven, and professionally competent policing institution capable of addressing terrorism and transnational crime, safeguarding communities, and contributing to regional and global peace,” the statement added.
The Force reiterated that the international training aligns with its broader strategy of improving operational effectiveness through global partnerships, advanced capacity building and intelligence-driven policing to confront emerging security threats.
