Regional Integration and Security Dynamics in West Africa: Prospects and Strategic Future

Last week, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Federal University Dutsin-Ma held its maiden International Conference on Political Science with the theme: “Regional Integration and Security Dynamics in West Africa: Prospects and Strategic Future.” The conference brought together distinguished academics, policymakers, researchers, and security experts from across the country and beyond to deliberate on the complex interplay between regional cooperation and security imperatives in an increasingly volatile global landscape.

The event not only showcased the University’s capacity to host world-class academic gatherings but also reinforced its commitment to contributing meaningfully to the resolution of pressing societal challenges.

The Keynote Speaker was Prof. Paul Izah of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the indefatigable icon of academic excellence, who set the intellectual tone for the deliberations that followed. As the conference proceeded with technical sessions, breakout discussions, and paper presentations, participants engaged in robust intellectual exchanges that culminated in actionable recommendations for policymakers, security agencies, and regional bodies.

The conference was certainly a community service, a cardinal function of a university.
As the chief host of the conference, I had the privilege of delivering opening remarks, which I am sharing with my esteemed readers for their information and enlightenment. Happy reading.

It is with immense pleasure and a profound sense of responsibility that I welcome you all to this International Conference, organized by the Department of Political Science, on the timely and thought-provoking theme, “Regional Integration and Security Dynamics in West Africa: Prospects and Strategic Futures.”

On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, and students of our great University, I warmly welcome our distinguished participants who have traveled from across Nigeria, throughout West Africa, and beyond to contribute to this important intellectual engagement. Your presence reflects our shared commitment to advancing knowledge and developing practical solutions to the complex governance and security challenges facing our region.

This conference comes at a particularly significant moment in West Africa’s history. The region continues to face unprecedented security threats, including terrorism, violent extremism, insurgency, transnational organized crime, piracy, cybercrime, arms trafficking, climate-induced conflicts, unconstitutional changes of government, electoral violence, and worsening humanitarian crises.

These challenges have not only threatened national stability but have also tested the resilience of regional institutions established to promote peace, security, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
At the same time, West Africa offers enormous opportunities. With its youthful population, abundant natural resources, expanding markets, rich cultural diversity, and growing technological innovation, the region has tremendous potential to become a major driver of Africa’s economic transformation. However, this potential can only be realized in an environment of peace, political stability, effective governance, economic cooperation, and collective security.

Regional integration has therefore become more than an economic aspiration; it is now a strategic necessity. Institutions such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have played commendable roles in advancing economic cooperation, democratic governance, conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and regional diplomacy. Nevertheless, emerging realities demand renewed strategies, stronger institutions, innovative policy responses, and deeper collaboration among governments, universities, civil society organizations, and development partners.

The theme of this conference is therefore both timely and intellectually compelling. It invites us to critically examine not only West Africa’s current security architecture but also the future of regional integration amid rapidly evolving geopolitical, economic, technological, and environmental realities. It challenges scholars and policymakers to rethink conventional approaches and propose innovative strategies that strengthen regional resilience.

As a university, we firmly believe that higher education institutions occupy a unique position to address societal challenges. Universities are not merely centers for teaching and research; they are incubators of ideas, laboratories for innovation, and platforms for evidence-based policymaking. Through rigorous scholarship and interdisciplinary collaboration, universities contribute significantly to national development, regional integration, and global peace.

Our Department of Political Science deserves commendation for organizing this international conference. By convening academics, policymakers, security practitioners, diplomats, development experts, civil society actors, and students, the Department has created an important platform for intellectual exchange and policy dialogue. These engagements strengthen the bridge between academic research and practical governance and foster partnerships capable of producing impactful solutions to contemporary challenges.
I am especially delighted that this conference offers young scholars and graduate students the opportunity to engage with leading experts across political science, international relations, peace and conflict studies, security studies, development studies, economics, law, sociology, and related disciplines. These interactions are essential for nurturing the next generation of scholars and policy leaders who will shape Africa’s future.

As we deliberate over the next few days, I encourage participants to engage in frank, constructive, and solution-oriented discussions. Let us move beyond diagnosing problems to developing actionable policy recommendations that strengthen regional institutions, enhance collective security, promote democratic governance, deepen economic integration, and improve the welfare of our people.

I also urge participants to pay particular attention to emerging issues including digital governance, artificial intelligence and security, cybersecurity, climate security, migration, youth unemployment, gender inclusion in peacebuilding, border governance, food security, and the implications of global power competition for West Africa. These issues increasingly define the strategic environment in which regional integration must evolve.
The outcomes of this conference should not remain within the pages of conference proceedings alone. Rather, they should inform public policy, strengthen regional cooperation, enrich academic discourse, and contribute meaningfully to decision-making at national, regional, and continental levels. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that research serves society and that knowledge translates into practical solutions for sustainable peace and development.

As Chief Host, I reaffirm our university’s unwavering commitment to advancing excellence in research, innovation, international collaboration, and community engagement. We will continue to support initiatives that foster intellectual exchange, policy innovation, and partnerships to address pressing development challenges across Nigeria, West Africa, and the African continent.

Permit me to express my sincere appreciation to the Local Organizing Committee, the Department of Political Science, the conference sponsors, the development partners, the invited speakers, and all participants for their dedication and support, which have made this important event possible. Your commitment to advancing scholarship and regional development is deeply appreciated.

It is my earnest hope that the deliberations at this conference will yield fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and practical recommendations that will significantly strengthen regional integration, improve security governance, and shape a more peaceful, prosperous, and resilient West Africa.
