NiDCOM Secures Release of Detained Nigerian Girls in Mauritius, Says Victims Returning Home
…engages Nigerian Embassy, vows accountability and stronger protection for citizens abroad

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of the Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, announcing that the victims have been freed and are on their way back to Nigeria after transiting through Nairobi, Kenya.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, on August 3, 2026.
According to the Commission, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has remained in close contact with the relevant Nigerian Embassy, which formally intervened with the Mauritian authorities to secure the release of the girls while also pursuing measures to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence of the incident.
Dabiri-Erewa disclosed that the girls had been safely released in Nairobi and were already en route to Nigeria.
She expressed sympathy for the affected Nigerians and said the Commission hopes they will be willing to recount their experiences upon arrival to enable the government provide appropriate support and strengthen measures to protect Nigerians travelling abroad.
“The girls have been safely released in Nairobi and are currently en route to Nigeria,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
The NiDCOM Chairman reiterated that the welfare, safety and protection of Nigerians living and travelling abroad remain a top priority of the Commission.
She stressed that the Commission would continue working closely with Nigerian diplomatic missions and relevant authorities to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of citizens overseas in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dabiri-Erewa also assured Nigerians in the diaspora that the Commission would sustain efforts to respond promptly to cases involving the safety and welfare of citizens while strengthening mechanisms aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
