Umahi Canvasses South-East Support for Tinubu Ahead of 2027
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has said he will continue to advocate support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the South-East ahead of the 2027 presidential election, urging voters in the region to assess the administration’s projects and policies before making their choice.
Umahi made the call in Abuja on Tuesday while responding to presentations by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) following their inspection of Federal Government infrastructure projects in the North-West.
The Minister specifically urged people of the South-East not to support the presidential candidacy of Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, saying he would continue to canvass support for Tinubu in the region.
“I will continue to tell Igbos not to vote for Peter Obi, but to vote for President Bola Tinubu. That it is a right decision to make,” Umahi said.
He described support for Tinubu as a political choice, stressing that individuals who hold such views should not be attacked or insulted for expressing their political preferences.
Umahi also challenged political leaders seeking the support of the South-East to present their records in government and allow the people to compare their respective achievements.
“Let people come and say, this is what we have done for the people of South-East. Let us put this side by side. We want to be President. Let us know what we have done for the people of South-East,” he said.
The Works Minister said the Tinubu administration had recorded progress in areas he said were important to the South-East, particularly infrastructure development and political appointments.
He urged Igbo leaders and other stakeholders to take information about Federal Government projects and programmes to communities across the region and explain their perceived benefits to the people.
Umahi maintained that greater awareness of government interventions at the grassroots would enable residents to assess the administration’s record alongside those of other political actors seeking their support in 2027.
His comments come as political parties and aspirants intensify consultations and mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the South-East remaining a key area of political engagement.
