The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has clarified that its ongoing petrol discount initiative is a temporary customer relief measure and does not represent the restoration of the Federal Government’s petroleum subsidy policy.

In a press release dated October 9, 2026, and signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC Limited said the initiative was designed to cushion the impact of elevated global crude oil prices and rising domestic petrol costs on households, businesses and the wider economy.

The company said the discount, initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, would continue until October 31, 2026, across NNPC Retail stations nationwide.

NNPC Limited acknowledged the economic pressures arising from higher petrol prices, noting that the increase affects transportation costs, business operations and household expenses.

“We recognise that higher petrol prices affect everyday life, from the cost of commuting to the expenses of running a business. We understand the strain on families and livelihoods, and this discount is intended to provide direct relief to customers during this difficult period,” the company stated.

The clarification follows a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, concerning measures to provide relief to Nigerians amid rising fuel prices linked to global market uncertainties and the conflict in the Middle East.

NNPC Limited said the initiative aligned with the Federal Government’s efforts to ease the burden on Nigerians while maintaining a commercially responsible approach to petroleum product supply and pricing.

However, the company stressed that the discount applies specifically to its retail outlets and does not establish a uniform national pump price or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

“This discount is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” the statement emphasised.

The national oil company urged Nigerians to disregard interpretations suggesting that the initiative amounted to a restoration of fuel subsidy, reaffirming its commitment to reliable product supply and collaboration with the government and other stakeholders.

It also pledged to provide clear information on the scope and duration of its customer initiatives to enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

“Our priority is to provide practical support while maintaining commercially responsible operations,” NNPC Limited stated, adding that its commitment to responsible customer service and transparent communication remained firm.
