The Nigeria Army has dismissed as false and misleading reports of an alleged attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral, assuring residents that there was no security breach in the state.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on April 4, 2026, by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Osoba. Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
According to the Army, the viral social media report circulating on Facebook was entirely unfounded and did not reflect the true security situation in Sokoto.
“We categorically debunk these unfounded claims as there was no such attack in Sokoto State,” the statement said.
The Army further reassured the public that Bishop Kukah remains safe and continues his religious obligations without disruption.
“The safety and security of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral remain intact. Bishop Kukah is currently fulfilling his Easter duties without any disruption,” it added.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Army stated that it is working closely with other security agencies to maintain peace across the state, especially during the Easter period.
“The Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” the statement noted.
It also emphasized that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to guarantee a peaceful celebration.
“Robust security measures are in place to guarantee a peaceful and secure Easter celebration in our area of responsibility,” the Army said.
