A governorship aspirant in Bauchi State, Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi, popularly known as YY Abdullahi, has declared his intention to contest for the governorship seat, saying he is fully prepared to serve the state after retiring from active civil service.
Speaking during an interview shortly after submitting his forms described himself as one of the gladiator in the contest, said his decision to join the race was driven by a desire to give back to the state for the opportunities and experiences it had offered him over the years.
“I’m Bauchi born. Bauchi State did a lot for me. I owe Bauchi State a lot,” he said.
According to him, his years of experience and public service have equipped him with the capacity to lead the state effectively.
“With all that I acquired in terms of experience — in fact, abundant experience — I know my pedigree. I know what I have to deliver. I know what to give back to Bauchi State for what it has done to me,” Abdullahi stated.
The aspirant stressed that he was entering the race fully prepared despite the presence of other notable political figures contesting for the party’s ticket.
Among those he acknowledged in the race is former governor of Bauchi State, whom he described as his “big brother.”
“ You are actually talking about my big brother, Abubakar. He’s my big brother. We have come a long way. I know him, he knows me, and most of the other candidates too. We have a wonderful relationship. It’s like a family,” he said.
He, however, maintained confidence in his chances, noting that he understands “the stuff” he is made of and is ready for the political contest.
On the mode of primaries proposed by his party, Abdullahi said he is comfortable with any option adopted, including direct primaries, or consensus arrangement.
“Anyone — direct election, indirect primaries, consensus — I’m comfortable with any,” he said.
He expressed optimism that party leaders and stakeholders would ensure a peaceful process capable of producing a consensus candidate.
“I’m sure at the end of the day they are not going to allow us crack our heads. They will come in and we’re going to reach a consensus. That’s my hope,” he added.
Explaining the meaning behind his popular initials “YY,” the aspirant said: “The first Y is Yakubu. The second Y is Yakubu. My father gave me his name, so I’m Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi.”
