Nigeria Police Mourns Veteran Officer AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, Hails Legacy of Distinguished Service

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the death of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Kanayo V. Uzuegbu, describing him as a highly respected officer whose more than three decades of dedicated service left an enduring mark on policing, peacekeeping, and public safety in Nigeria.

AIG Uzuegbu passed away on May 30, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

In the statement, the Force expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the senior officer, noting that he served the nation with distinction, professionalism, and unwavering commitment throughout his career.

“The leadership of the Force has conveyed its deepest condolences to the family of the late AIG Uzuegbu and described him as an officer who brought honour to the Force and served the nation with commendable dedication,” the statement said.

A native of Umuaka Community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, Uzuegbu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and underwent training at the Police Academy, Kaduna.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he rose steadily through the ranks, occupying several strategic command, operational, and administrative positions across the country and at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

His distinguished academic credentials included a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Port Harcourt, a Higher Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Maiduguri, and a Master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the University of Nigeria. He also attended numerous professional courses in counter-terrorism, human rights, law of armed conflict, and strategic leadership.

Among his notable assignments were Squadron Commander of No. 15 Police Mobile Force, Ilorin; Area Commander in Owerri and Karu; Director of the Central Planning Training Unit at the Police Staff College, Jos; Commissioner of Police, Operations Communication, Force Headquarters; and Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command.

Beyond his domestic assignments, the late senior officer also represented Nigeria in international peacekeeping efforts, serving as Commander of Sector 8 of the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in El-Dain, Darfur, Sudan.

The Force noted that his contributions to law enforcement, security management, personnel development, and peacebuilding earned him widespread respect among colleagues and stakeholders within and outside the policing community.

“AIG Uzuegbu served the Nigeria Police Force for over three decades with distinction, professionalism, and dedication to public safety,” the statement added.

The Nigeria Police Force prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, and associates the strength to bear the painful loss.

“May the Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and grant his family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” the Force stated.

The passing of AIG Uzuegbu marks the end of a remarkable career dedicated to national service, security, and the pursuit of peace, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of police officers.
