Police Secure Terrorism Conviction as Katsina Arms Traffickers Get 20-Year Jail Terms
By Pan Afric Reporters
The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism and illicit arms trafficking following the conviction of two suspects by the Federal High Court in Katsina over terrorism-related offences, with each sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
The development underscores the Force’s resolve to ensure that criminal investigations result in successful prosecution and justice, particularly in cases threatening Nigeria’s national security.
The disclosure was contained in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police.
According to the statement, the convicts, Abdussalam Muhammad and Aminu Mamman, were arrested in September 2025 by operatives of the Katsina State Police Command along the Ingawa–Karkarku Road while allegedly transporting a large cache of prohibited firearms and ammunition intended for criminal elements.
Police said the exhibits recovered during the operation included one PKT machine gun, 230 rounds of PKT ammunition, 1,663 rounds of 7.62mm × 39mm AK-47 ammunition, as well as the vehicle used to convey the weapons.
Following comprehensive investigations, the suspects were arraigned before the Federal High Court, Katsina Judicial Division, in Charge No. FHC/KT/84C/2025 on a five-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession and transportation of prohibited firearms and ammunition, rendering support to terrorists, and acts preparatory to terrorism, contrary to the provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act.
After a full trial in which the prosecution presented witnesses and tendered documentary and material evidence, the court found both defendants guilty on all counts.
The court subsequently sentenced each convict to five years’ imprisonment on Count One and 20 years’ imprisonment on each of Counts Two to Five, marking a significant legal victory in the country’s efforts to curb terrorism financing and arms proliferation.
Commending the outcome of the case, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, praised the professionalism and dedication of the investigators and prosecution team.
“The professionalism of the investigators and prosecution team whose diligent efforts culminated in the successful conviction is commendable,” the IGP stated.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to intensifying the fight against terrorism and dismantling illegal arms networks across the country.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to combating terrorism, disrupting the illicit proliferation of arms, and ensuring that all persons involved in acts threatening Nigeria’s national security are brought to justice,” the Inspector-General added.
The conviction is expected to bolster ongoing security efforts aimed at disrupting terrorist logistics, curbing the illegal circulation of firearms, and strengthening public confidence in the nation’s criminal justice system.
