President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force with the resources, technology and institutional reforms required to ensure peaceful and secure conduct of the 2027 general elections.

The President made the commitment on Monday, September 21, 2026, while declaring open the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026) in Owerri, Imo State, according to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, President Tinubu said the theme of the conference, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections,” was timely and relevant to the country’s preparations for the 2027 polls.

The President stressed the importance of professionalism, impartiality, intelligence-led policing and effective inter-agency coordination, while assuring the Force of continued government support in training, technology, operational logistics, welfare and institutional reforms.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, meanwhile, unveiled a six-pillar framework to guide the Nigeria Police Force’s security roadmap for the 2027 elections.

The framework focuses on strengthened intelligence and early-warning systems; intensive training and operational preparedness; joint command structures and inter-agency coordination; effective communication and technology deployment; sustained community partnership; and absolute neutrality in election policing.

Disu said the conference coincided with the International Day of Peace, being observed under the 2026 theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” stressing that peace-building required proactive policing and public confidence.

“For the Police, investing in peace requires professionalism, public trust and proactive measures to prevent violence before it occurs,” the IGP said.

As part of the strategy, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police to identify and map potential electoral flashpoints, criminal networks and emerging security threats within their respective commands, while strengthening early-warning mechanisms and community-based intelligence ahead of the elections.

The Force also announced plans to establish a dedicated channel for public complaints relating to the 2027 elections, with Disu stating that the Nigeria Police Force would release an official public election complaints line on October 12, 2026.

The IGP further reaffirmed the neutrality of the Police Force and warned against political violence, voter intimidation, vote-buying and other electoral offences.

He said any police officer found taking sides, harassing voters, colluding with political actors or abusing police powers would be held accountable.

“Absolute neutrality” is one of the six pillars of the election-security framework, underscoring the Force’s stated position that officers must perform their constitutional duties without political affiliation or discrimination.

The Executive Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who hosted the conference for the fourth time, welcomed participants and commended the Police Force for sustaining CARSPO as a platform for strategic engagement and development of responses to emerging security challenges.

The opening ceremony was attended by senior government officials, National Assembly representatives, military and security chiefs, former Inspectors-General of Police and representatives of the Police Service Commission and Police Community Relations Committee.

The Nigeria Police Force said it remained committed to professional, neutral and intelligence-led policing, stronger inter-agency collaboration and sustained community engagement as part of efforts to provide a safe environment for Nigerians to exercise their electoral rights during the 2027 general elections.
