The Federal Government has increased the installed capacity of the Kankia Transmission Substation in Katsina State by 150 per cent, following the commissioning of two 60-megavolt-ampere (MVA) power transformers to strengthen bulk electricity supply and support businesses, agriculture and household needs.

The Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Friday, October 23, 2026, in his address at the commissioning ceremony in Kankia. He said the project, delivered through the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), raised the substation’s installed capacity from 60 MVA to 150 MVA, equivalent to approximately 120 megawatts.

According to the minister, the two new 60 MVA, 132/33 kV transformers were installed in place of an existing 30 MVA unit, while the remaining 30 MVA transformer brings the facility’s total installed capacity to 150 MVA.

The expansion is expected to provide additional capacity to meet previously suppressed electricity demand and strengthen bulk supply to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for onward distribution to consumers.

“For the people of Kankia and the communities served by this substation, today’s commissioning is about greater opportunity: the opportunity to run a business, process agricultural produce and sustain a livelihood with stronger electricity infrastructure behind you,” Tegbe said.

The minister described the project as a practical demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, commending the President for prioritising power-sector reforms and investments in critical infrastructure.

“Kankia is a concrete expression of that commitment,” Tegbe said, adding that investments in electricity infrastructure should support production, create opportunities and improve the daily lives of Nigerians.

He disclosed that the project was executed through the Federal Ministry of Power and TCN, with China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute serving as the contractor. He commended the project partners, engineers, technicians and other personnel whose efforts contributed to its delivery.

Tegbe also acknowledged the support of Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, traditional institutions and host communities, describing their contributions as important to the successful implementation of the project.

The minister urged TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and KEDCO to strengthen coordination to ensure that the additional transformation capacity translates into improved electricity service for consumers.

He also called for proper maintenance of the newly installed equipment, stressing the need to keep consumer needs at the centre of power-sector operations.

The commissioning forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen transmission infrastructure, improve the delivery of available electricity and expand the capacity of the national grid to support economic activities.
