DAILY HOPE DEOPTIONAL: JANUARY 18 BECAUSE YOU HAVE SAID IT, I WILL OBEY” (2) SCRIPTURES: LUKE 5:1-7; JEREMIAH 35: 2 – 6, 19

Our devotional yesterday told us how Apostle Peter obeyed the LORD Jesus Christ when he was told to cast his net to the right side of the boat on hearing Peter saying they have toiled all nights and caught nothing. Jesus’ instruction came at the most hopeless time for Peter. Here is a man known for wizardry knowledge of how to catch fish in any river around his areas. He could have argued with Jesus because he knew Jesus never worked as a fisherman. Nevertheless, Peter obeyed his master. The obedience brought Peter fame. The Bible said the fishes that were caught that beat down records of other fishes ever caught by fishermen there. As seen yesterday, the devotional told us that obedience to the master’s instruction is always preceded by miracle. Today’s devotional looks into a family that obeyed the instruction of God and later got generational blessing from God.

The Bible has the story of the Rechaabites children who, against all urge from Jeremiah the Prophet; refused to drink strong wine because their grandfather passed the instruction to their father who in turn passed same instruction to them._ We can see in Jer. 35: 5 that it was Jeremiah who presented the pot full of wine and the cups for the sons of Rechabites to drink the wine. The responses from the Rechabites children worth looking into seriously here. They knew Jeremiah as an outstanding Prophet of God. Yet they said out rightly: “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our father commanded us saying, ye shall drink no wine, neither ye nor your sons forever” (KJV). These Rechabites chose to obey God’s word rather than the word of a Prophet no matter the aura of anointing of the Prophet. This is far from what we are seeing in this generation where people hardly resist to sinful suggestions of the Pastors.

Like how Apostle Peter had the blessing from Jesus for agreeing to cast the net at the exact place Jesus commanded, the son of Rechabites got the reward of their obedience to God. As seen in Jer. 35: 19, God reserved position of one to be standing before Him on behalf of Israelites. Jeremiah said: “Therefore, thus saith the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, Janadab, the son of Rechab, shall not lack a man to stand before me forever” (KJV). Rechab obeyed God, passed the obedience to Jonadab and Jonadab passed same instruction his sons. They ended up building empire of High Priest for their children as long as the world lasts. Christians of our generation have to learn lesson from this story. We must strive to build our children in every godliness for God to create fruitful and honourable positions for them in life._ It is very possible even in this rebellious world we are living in.

PRAYER:

GLORIOUS FATHER, give all Christians of the world the readiness to obey your word, the instructions found in the Bible and the will to pass the same to our children and children-children in the name of Jesus Christ.
