DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: MARCH 1 THE WORLD OF GREED (1) Scripture: 2 Kings 5: 15 – 27

Spread the love

One of the greatest enemies of integrity of mankind is GREED. Greed has played dominant roles in reducing every man or woman the noble character he or she was born into, in this world. The world presently is being held hostage by greed as it has enrolled almost all mankind into its army. The Bible passage read in this devotional revealed how greed influenced Prophet Elisha’s servant, Gehazi. His reputation ended up a leper. Greed has dangerously permeated all the facets of life, society and organizations. Greed has become a major motivator that has corrupted the world today. Greed is seen in every life from the smallest to the biggest person.

The word “greed” comes from an Old English word “graedig.” It was from this word we have the word “voracious” which simply means “always hungering for more.” Google Website defines greed as an “intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power or food.” It is a lust for more, more material wealth, more of what someone else has, or just more in whatever the eyes could see and the heart can desire. This devotional is mainly to discuss evil results that can be got when mankind or the world at large succumb to urges of greed. Christians and all human beings globally, should not allow dominance of greed takes a highest seat on their hearts. A curious glance at the world will reveal sorrowful truths of how deep “greed” has eaten into the economies, politics, traditions, religious organizations and the societies.

This devotional throws its weight on what evils greed has cost the world. Economic recess, inflations, moral decays, violence, insecurities and other heinous vices, engulfing the world today took their bearing from “greed.” That is mankind’s tendencies to wanting more and more things for self alone. The desire to be rich alone, the passion to live comfortably above others, the dreams to belong to the highest position of leadership is what greed flashes before the eyes of people always. Gehazi saw the gold, silver, bale of clothing, jewelries and others the Army General (Naaman) brought as gifts for Prophet Elisha; should he be healed of his leprosy. He heard the master rejecting all. He saw the Army General going back with everything. Then, greed suggested to him to run after Naaman the Army general so as to get his share. He did catch up with Naaman, lied against his master, got his share of the gifts.

What followed Gehazi after was leprosy. He got the gifts by greed but ended up becoming a leper. We reading this devotional must realize from Gehazi’s story that “greed” does more harm to human beings as well as to the nations. Gehazi fell from glory to grass. He lost all the privileges of the “Special Assistant” to a great Prophet. He would live the remaining days of his life under closed doors where friends and relations will no longer open to visit. Greed does more such evil to individuals and nations if people embrace her gospel. Next series will talk more on this. We, reading this devotional must look inward and see how much of greed we have on our inside and deal with it in prayers before it kills us.

PRAYER:

1. Pray and ask God to open your eyes to where dangerous greed is lodged in your life so that you pray for deliverance.
2. Ask God to separate you from the spirit of Gehazi in Jesus name.

POSITIVE CONFESSION:

I will not lose my cherished dignity because of greed. Halleluiah.
