Ado Local Government Chairman Mourns Losses from Devastating Ukwonyo Fire
Hon. Engr. Sunny Oche, Chairman of Ado Local Government, has expressed deep sorrow over the significant losses incurred in a recent fire incident that destroyed several business premises in Ukwonyo community. The fire, which broke out in the late hours of April 28, 2025, consumed the shops of Mr. Mathew Echi-Igelle, Sunday Unachi, and Mrs. Elo Nwachukwu. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Chairman, Engr. Oche according to a press statement e-sign by his Principal Private Secretary, Innocent Igelle lamented the timing of the tragedy, noting that the affected shop owners were on the verge of peak business activity amidst a challenging economic climate. He offered words of comfort and encouragement to the victims, urging them to remain hopeful despite their losses and to count their blessings in having escaped unharmed. “This is a temporary setback,” he stated, “and better days are ahead.”
The Chairman highlighted the inadequacy of immediate rescue efforts during the fire, acknowledging the helplessness of residents in the face of the rapidly spreading blaze. He has subsequently initiated an investigation into the incident through the Local Government Security Adviser, Knight Chief Vincent Amna, to determine the exact cause and to identify any contributing factors.
In the wake of this devastating event, Hon. Engr. Oche is urging all business owners in the area to prioritize fire safety measures. He emphasized the importance of regular checks on electrical installations to prevent exposed wiring, and the need to consistently turn off and unplug electrical appliances such as irons and hot plates, particularly during periods of power outages. He also recommended keeping fire extinguishers readily available and adopting other preventative measures.
The Chairman further stressed the critical role of community vigilance, called upon residents to report any signs of fire immediately to minimize the risk of further damage. He pledged to instruct the local Vigilante group to enhance their responsiveness and to promptly alert authorities in the event of emergencies. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
