Headline: FG Revamps Healthcare Delivery, Unveils 16 Major Health Projects in Sokoto Neuropsychiatric Hospital Under Renewed Hope Agenda

In a bold stride toward revamping Nigeria’s healthcare landscape, the Federal Government has commissioned 16 critical infrastructure projects at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kware, Sokoto State — a landmark move under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Wednesday, was led by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, who hailed the development as a significant leap in boosting mental health services and general healthcare delivery across the northern region.

“This commissioning is a clear demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to making federal health institutions more effective, accessible, and people-centred,” Dr. Salako declared. “The projects here in Kware are part of over 500 infrastructure upgrades completed nationwide in just two years.”

Among the newly inaugurated facilities according to a press release e-signed by the Deputy Director, Information & Public Relations of the Ministry,Alaba Balogun are a state-of-the-art Molecular Laboratory, an Intensive Care Unit, a Regional Women and Children Drug Dependency Treatment Centre, a modern Accident and Emergency Centre, a Multipurpose Students’ Hostel, a School of Post Basic Nursing (Psychiatry), and a solar-powered alternative energy system.

The minister commended the hospital’s outgoing Medical Director, Professor Sheu Sale, for his visionary leadership and judicious use of resources, which he said has transformed the hospital into a flagship institution for psychiatric care in Nigeria.

Dr. Salako also highlighted broader national achievements under the health sector reforms, revealing that more than 50 similar projects have been completed across four geopolitical zones. He noted the employment of over 15,000 health workers in the past year and ongoing digital transformation efforts aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and patient care.

On mental health reform, he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the full implementation of the National Mental Health Act, 2023, which prioritizes integrating mental health services into primary care, decriminalizing suicide, and combating stigma.

Addressing the persistent energy challenges in health facilities, Dr. Salako emphasized the government’s investment in renewable energy solutions. He announced an upcoming National Dialogue on Power in Healthcare and unveiled plans for Renewed Hope Health Connect, a flagship outreach expected to deliver free medical, surgical, and specialist services to one million vulnerable Nigerians.

He also expressed gratitude to the Sokoto State Government and traditional institutions, particularly the Sultan of Sokoto, for their unwavering support in advancing health development in the region.

The event concluded with accolades for Professor Sheu Sale, whose eight-year tenure was celebrated as a period of remarkable institutional growth and modernization.
