Abuja, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly dismissed recent allegations linking the Nigerian military to the tragic massacre in Yelwata, Benue State, labeling the claims of internal sabotage as baseless and unsupported by credible evidence.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, emphasized that the military remains committed to its constitutional duty of protecting civilians and upholding the rule of law.

“The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to recent claims suggesting that internal sabotage within the Nigerian military contributed to the tragic events in Yelwata, Benue State. These claims are unfounded and not supported by credible evidence,” the statement read.

General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, has repeatedly denied any military involvement in the massacre, reinforcing the position that the armed forces were not responsible for the killings. Independent investigations, including those by human rights organizations, have so far found no link between the military and the perpetrators of the violence.

According to DHQ, the Yelwata killings are part of a wider trend of intercommunal clashes in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where tensions between farmers and herders over land, grazing rights, and dwindling resources have led to recurring violence.

“Blaming the military for these atrocities only detracts from the complex socio-economic and political factors driving the crisis,” the DHQ stated. “It is essential to focus on addressing the root causes and supporting long-term peace initiatives.”

The Chief of Defence Staff has called for a collaborative approach, urging both local communities and security agencies to work more closely in tackling the insecurity. He appealed to community leaders to avoid shielding criminal elements and assured residents that the military is fully committed to safeguarding lives and property.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with intercommunal violence, the Defence Headquarters reiterates its stance: the path to lasting peace lies in unity, trust, and sustained cooperation among all stakeholders.
