Defence Headquarters Refutes Misrepresentation of CDS Remarks on Yelwata Tragedy
By Pan Afric Reporters June 24, 2025
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a strong rebuttal against what it describes as a misrepresentation of recent remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, concerning the tragic incident in Yelwata, Benue State.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ expressed concern over a news article that allegedly distorted the CDS’s comments and the interpretation offered by the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI).
“We categorically state that the interpretation and portrayal of the CDS’s comments… are both misleading and taken out of context,” the statement read. “At no point did the CDS intend to blame victims or justify the heinous acts perpetrated by criminal elements.”
According to the Defence Headquarters, General Musa’s remarks were made in good faith and intended to highlight the complex realities of modern conflict zones. His comments, the DHQ explained, were part of a broader appeal for community vigilance and cooperation with security agencies in the fight against insurgents and criminal networks.
“The CDS’s statement aimed to encourage unity, not division. It is unfortunate that certain advocacy groups have chosen to twist the narrative and politicize such a sensitive matter,” the DHQ added.
The statement emphasized General Musa’s long-standing dedication to national unity, civil-military relations, and the safety of all Nigerians—irrespective of ethnic, religious, or gender differences. It dismissed accusations that the CDS’s comments were “reckless, insensitive, or provocative” as entirely unfounded and damaging to the morale and credibility of the Armed Forces.
“Such a claim… undermines the efforts of the armed forces in managing highly volatile and emotionally charged security situations across the country,” the DHQ stated.
While affirming respect for the right to free expression, the Defence Headquarters urged civil society groups and citizens to verify facts and engage constructively, especially when addressing matters of national security. The DHQ reaffirmed its commitment to justice, peace, and national cohesion, calling for collective effort to support security operations and safeguard the unity of Nigeria.
“We remain committed to working with all communities, civil society organizations, and government partners to ensure justice, peace, and accountability prevail,” the statement concluded.
