In a bold move to drive inclusive governance and constitutional reform, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, on Wednesday unveiled a compendium of 86 constitution amendment bills, urging Nigerians across the country to actively participate in shaping the nation’s future.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja alongside members of the House Committee on Constitution Review, which he chairs, Kalu described the initiative as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. The comprehensive compendium, he said, is organized into 13 thematic areas ranging from Electoral and Judicial Reforms to Security, Devolution of Powers, and the Creation of States and Local Governments.
“The Bills, sponsored by Members of the House, represent legislative efforts aimed at addressing various developmental challenges affecting governance practices in Nigeria,” Kalu stated.
Deputy Speaker Kalu according to a press release e-signed by his Chief Press Secretarary, Levinus Nwabughiogu said the compendium includes explanatory memoranda, long titles, and in-depth expositions of each bill to help citizens understand the scope and objectives of the proposed amendments.
To deepen public engagement, Kalu announced a series of zonal public hearings scheduled to hold in 12 centers across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The hearings will take place from July 11 to July 13 in the North and July 18 to July 20 in the South, with a National Public Hearing set for July 21, 2025.
“These hearings are designed to provide an open platform for citizens, civil society organizations, professional bodies, traditional institutions, and other interest groups to express their views and contribute meaningfully to the constitutional reform process,” he added.
Kalu emphasized that public input will play a pivotal role in refining the legislative proposals and guiding lawmakers when the bills are brought up for voting.
He called on Nigerians to download the compendium from the official portal — www.hccr.gov.ng — review the documents, and submit their feedback during the hearings.
“ I call on all stakeholders and the general public to actively participate in the zonal and national public hearings. Your contributions and inputs are crucial to the success of this constitutional review process. Together, we can create a more inclusive and effective constitution that reflects the aspirations of our great nation,” the Deputy Speaker said.
