DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: August 13 Topic: ANGELIC VISITATION TO JOSHUA (1) Scriptures: Joshua 5: 13 – 15; 6:1 – 8.
Joshua was the first captain of the Israelites army. He was one of the two spies who brought back good report concerning the Promised Land (Num. 14: 6 – 9). Later, God made it known to Moses that Joshua was to succeed Moses. Moses laid hands upon him so he could receive the spirit of wisdom (Deut. 34: 9). After the death of Moses, God commissioned Joshua to lead the children of Israel across Jordan. Behind them was the river, before them was the city of Jericho, it was too late to turn back now! How would he accomplish this great task? Joshua had reached the most critical hour of his life.
Joshua stood by the city of Jericho gathering information about the city and its fortifications in preparation to launch his attack. He was naturally concerned about several things; he needed a plan of action, just how would they go about attacking Jericho. Besieging a city like Jericho was something for which they had little or no experience. They lacked the equipment like catapults, scaling ladders or moving towers. All they had was swords, arrows, slings, and Spears which naturally would seem totally inadequate for the task before them. He must have felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on his shoulder. At this point, Joshua needed an encounter with the God he served, which was equally vital as part of his preparation for victory by the power of God. He stood alone, he saw a man standing opposite him with a drawn sword in his hands. Who is this? How did this stranger get into the camp? Joshua boldly asked,” Are you for us or for our adversaries?” (Josh 5: 13). The angel replied, “No, but as commander of the army of the lord I have now come” (v14).
God is the supreme commander; all of us in the army of the king must be following the lord, submitting to His authority, taking orders from Him, and resting the battle in His hands; because we realize it is really His battle. The lesson we are to learn from the encounter of Joshua and the commander of the lord’s army are enormous. Firstly, God’s personal presence and His powerful provision. These are the provision of His vast hosts and the myriad of God’s angelic army. The promise of God’s personal presence always carries with it the promise of His infinite supply and power, no matter how impossible the problem may appear to us. “Are they not all ministering spirit, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?” (Heb. 2:14). There are ministering angels send from heaven to guide and protect especially when at a crossroad. This topic will be concluded tomorrow.

*LOh Lord, in my life battles, send me an angel to encourage me and help me.

God is the supreme commander. I submit to His authority as I rest my battles in His hands.
