The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, has expressed deep concern over what he described as growing moral decadence in society, following the arrest of two suspects involved in a staged kidnap incident in the state.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, arrested the suspects, identified as Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye (23) and Chibuike Ogbu (24), after uncovering that Nmesoma allegedly conspired with her boyfriend, Chibuike, to fake her own abduction.

Investigations revealed that the suspects initially demanded a ransom of ₦15 million from Nmesoma’s family. After negotiations, the family transferred ₦3 million into her account. Police operatives later recovered ₦1.2 million, part of the ransom sum, during the operation that also led to the rescue of the supposed victim.

Speaking on the development, CP Orutugu in a press release e-signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga condemned the act, noting that such incidents reflect the alarming level of moral decay among young people. He called on parents, guardians, and religious leaders to play a stronger role in instilling values of discipline, integrity, and honesty in the younger generation.

“This incident is a reflection of the rising moral decay in society, where young people are increasingly resorting to criminality for selfish gains,” CP Orutugu said. “The long arm of the law will always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be.”

The Commissioner further warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that crime, in any form, remains punishable under the law.

The suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
