IGP Disu Promotes Nearly 18,000 Junior Police Officers Nationwide to Boost Morale, Professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the promotion of 17,952 junior police officers across the country in a major personnel advancement exercise aimed at enhancing welfare, rewarding excellence, and strengthening operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The promotion, one of the largest in recent years, cuts across police commands and formations nationwide and is expected to boost morale among rank-and-file officers while reinforcing the Force’s commitment to merit-based career progression.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 30, 2026.
According to the statement, the promotion exercise includes the elevation of 165 Sergeants to the rank of Inspector, 73 Corporals to the rank of Sergeant, and 17,714 Constables to the rank of Corporal.
The police leadership described the exercise as part of ongoing reforms designed to improve personnel welfare, recognize hard work, and encourage officers to remain dedicated to their constitutional responsibilities.
Speaking on the development, IGP Disu emphasized that timely promotion remains a critical component of the Force’s human resource management strategy and an essential tool for motivating personnel.

He noted that the advancement of deserving officers reflects the commitment of the current police leadership to professionalism, institutional development, and merit-driven career growth.
The police chief further charged the newly promoted officers to regard their elevation as a call to greater service and responsibility.
“Officers should see their promotion as a call to greater responsibility, professionalism, discipline, and dedication to service,” he said.
IGP Disu also urged the beneficiaries to uphold the core values of the Nigeria Police Force by performing their duties with integrity, respect for human rights, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
The promotion exercise comes amid ongoing efforts by the Force leadership to improve personnel motivation and strengthen institutional capacity in line with global best practices in modern policing.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to excellence, the statement stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to reward diligence, professionalism, and hard work while implementing reforms aimed at building a more effective and service-oriented policing institution.
