The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda will deliver an unprecedented transformation of Nigeria’s livestock sector, describing the creation of the ministry as a “turning point” in the nation’s economic history.
Delivering his keynote address at the 2025 Media Retreat for Livestock Reporters in Kaduna on Monday, September 15, Maiha said Tinubu’s decision to establish the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in July 2025 was more than a bureaucratic move, it was a bold economic strategy.
“The creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is indeed a blessing to the country. It is an opportunity for wealth and job creation for our teeming population. By this singular act, President Tinubu has provided a platform for industry players to make their contributions to the country’s GDP. The task is huge but the vision is clear,” he asserted.
Maiha unveiled the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) as the administration’s blueprint for the next five years, urging the media to mainstream it into national discourse.
“We have achieved this through the crafting of the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy. May I request that this document should form the centre piece of your reporting principles for the sector,” the minister told the retreat themed “Driving Livestock Growth through Strategic Communication.”
Framing livestock development as central to Nigeria’s economic recovery, Maiha revealed that state governments were already aligning with Tinubu’s vision by creating livestock ministries, while foreign investors from Europe, Asia, and the Americas were showing “tremendous interest” in Nigeria’s livestock potential.
The minister disclosed that the administration had commenced large-scale reforms including the resuscitation of dormant livestock facilities, animal health projects, pasture cultivation, feedlots, and modern abattoirs.
“The country will soon witness an implosion in meat and milk production, as well as a significant improvement in overall livestock value chain transformation,” Maiha promised.
On the sensitive issue of insecurity, the minister linked sustainable peace to the economic success of Tinubu’s livestock reforms.
“In the coming weeks, my Ministry will embark on a national peace campaign aimed at achieving sustainable peace between farmers and herders, ethnic and sectional groups as well as warring communities across the country,” he said, stressing that “the attainment of peace is fundamental to nation-building.”
With his remarks, Maiha positioned the livestock sector not just as an agricultural frontier, but as a political and economic pillar of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, capable of creating jobs, attracting foreign investment, and cementing peace in troubled communities.
