NASENI Boss, Khalil Halilu, Honoured as Distinguished Fellow of Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, has been conferred with the Distinguished Fellowship of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), the highest professional recognition within the Institution.

The conferment ceremony, which according to a press release e-signed by the agency’s Deputy Director, Information, NASENI Mr. Chima Cletus Akwaja took place on Tuesday at The Podium Event Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, was part of the ongoing 38th International Conference, Exhibition and Annual General Meeting of the Institution themed “Promoting Sustainable Blue Economy Through Technological Advancement The Mechanical Engineering Perspectives.”

The event brought together leading figures from Nigeria’s engineering, industrial, and innovation sectors to celebrate individuals whose leadership and service have significantly contributed to the advancement of mechanical engineering in the country.

Mr. Halilu, represented by Engr. Rasheed Agavah, Acting Coordinating Director, Engineering Infrastructure Directorate, NASENI, commended NIMechE for the honour, describing it as both “humbling and inspiring.”

“This honour is a call to do more in advancing Nigeria’s science and engineering landscape through NASENI’s mandate while accelerating growth in the nation’s industrial sector,” he said.

According to NASENI, the conferment follows Halilu’s election by the NIMechE Council during its 88th Council Meeting held on 15th July 2025, in recognition of his transformational leadership and outstanding contributions to promoting homegrown engineering and technological solutions across Nigeria.

Under his leadership, NASENI has emerged as a national driver of industrialization, championing technology transfer, renewable energy adoption, agricultural mechanization, and electric mobility, all of which align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Institution noted that the Distinguished Fellowship is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional excellence, integrity, and impact within the mechanical engineering profession and beyond.

In addition to Mr. Halilu, Engr. Bernard Ozigi, Director of the Technology Business Development Department at NASENI and Special Adviser, General Matters to the EVC/CEO, was also conferred with the Fellowship of the NIMechE.

The award plaque will be formally presented to Mr. Halilu at a later date at the NASENI Headquarters in Abuja.

The recognition, according to observers, reaffirms NASENI’s growing reputation as a hub of indigenous innovation and a critical institution driving Nigeria’s industrial and technological renaissance.

I’m grateful to all the stakeholders, our leaders, our constituents and most importantly our governor who stood by us throughout the process. Above all, I thank God for giving us this opportunity to serve again.” The lawmaker described the turnout and mobilisation witnessed during the primaries as only a glimpse of what to expect during the general elections. “This is nothing compared to what will happen during the general election,” Kama stated confidently. “This is just a piece of cake for what is going to happen during the election proper.” Kama assured constituents that his second term would usher in greater development and more opportunities for the constituency. According to him, his return to the National Assembly would strengthen the constituency’s chances of attracting more federal projects and benefits, especially as a ranking member of the House. “More development and more ability to attract goodies to our constituency is what our people should expect,” he said. “We have only done one budget, and now we are preparing for the second budget cycle. We’ll revisit communities we promised projects and ensure we fulfil those promises before moving forward.” He added that retaining experienced lawmakers was crucial to securing greater influence and benefits for the constituency. “A ranking member is a ranking member; you can’t buy that in the market,” he noted. “I believe our governor, being a former parliamentarian, understands the importance of having ranking lawmakers who can attract more development to the constituency.” Also speaking after the primaries, Ebonyi State Commissioner for ICT, Tochukwu Okorie, said the massive turnout and patience of party supporters reflected the confidence of the people in the APC. “I align myself with the feelings of my people.When you look at the crowd and the fact that they have waited here since morning, it shows they are happy and satisfied with the party.”, he said. Reacting to questions about possible opposition challenges ahead of the general election, the commissioner dismissed fears, insisting the APC remained firmly rooted among the people. The APC primaries in the Ohanivo Federal Constituency recorded a large turnout of party faithful and supporters, setting the stage for what promises to be a keenly contested general election
