The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disi, has received the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Force Regulations, describing the development as a major step toward deepening reforms, professionalism, and accountability within the force.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer.

The regulations were formally handed over by the Minister of Police Affairs, Obrahim Gaidam, during a ceremony held at the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat, Olu Olu Ogunsakin, said the gazettement bridges the gap between the Police Act 2020 and operational realities, marking a transition from policy formulation to practical implementation.

In his keynote address, Gaidam reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening police reforms and ensuring that the new regulations align with national security priorities.

“This is a critical step in consolidating ongoing reforms and ensuring a more effective policing system,” the minister said.

Reacting, IGP Disu described the regulations as a clear framework for rights-based and accountable policing.

“This is a major milestone. The Regulations provide a comprehensive guide for professional, accountable, and citizen-focused policing in Nigeria,” he said.

He also commended the minister’s leadership and acknowledged the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other stakeholders in advancing the reform agenda.

The police chief assured Nigerians that the force would move swiftly to implement the regulations across all commands and formations.

“We will ensure immediate implementation through force-wide dissemination, integration into training and operational frameworks, and strict enforcement. Accountability will remain central to our operations,” Disu stated.

The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives of the Police Service Commission,  National Human Right Commission, Nigeria Police Trust Fund, the Federal Ministry of Justice, civil society organisations, and development partners.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to fully implementing the regulations as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism, enhance accountability, and rebuild public trust in the institution.
