Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa has been honoured as the Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year 2025, a recognition that underscores the sweeping reforms and renewed momentum in the country’s education sector.

The award was presented at the Silver Jubilee Awards organised by Independent Newspaper Limited in Lagos, following a rigorous selection process that combined public voting, independent jury assessment, and editorial board review.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Folashade Boriowo Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

Alausa emerged winner from a competitive field of cabinet ministers across sectors, with organisers citing his “exceptional leadership, innovative governance, and measurable impact in public service delivery.”

Reacting to the award, the minister expressed appreciation to Nigerians and the organisers, describing the recognition as a reflection of collective efforts to reposition the education sector.

“I sincerely thank Nigerians, the organisers, and the judges for this honour,” he said. “It reflects the collective effort to reposition education in our country. While we appreciate this recognition, it also reminds us that there is still much work to be done.”

He added, “This is only the beginning, and we remain fully committed to driving meaningful and lasting reforms that will secure a better future for every Nigerian child.”

The recognition comes amid ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which focuses on expanding access, improving quality, and aligning education with national development priorities.

Key interventions under the initiative include the revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), expanded investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM), as well as the rollout of the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) to support innovation among students.

The ministry has also introduced the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), aimed at strengthening data-driven planning and transparency through real-time monitoring of schools, teachers, and students nationwide.

In addition, efforts to address out-of-school children and expand opportunities for girls’ education have been intensified, alongside investments in teacher training, welfare, and infrastructure development.

The Ministry noted that these reforms are being driven through strategic partnerships with subnational governments, development partners, and the private sector to deepen impact across the country.

“The recognition serves as renewed motivation to accelerate reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a resilient, skills-driven, and future-ready education system.

Observers say the award signals growing national and institutional acknowledgment of the administration’s push to transform Nigeria’s education landscape and strengthen human capital development.
